Freescale merges ARM, E-Ink for next-gen e-book hardware

Freescale, the ailing semiconductor spinoff of Motorola, has announced a licensing deal with E-Ink to integrate controllers for electronic paper displays into its i.MX family of ARM-based system-on-chips (SoC). This new combination of ARM and E-Ink won’t immediately provide any dramatic benefits in terms of either battery life or functionality, but the move does lay the groundwork for a coming era when e-paper displays gain color capabilities and reduce their refresh time enough to support animation.
