Apple acknowledges continuing 27" iMac screen issues

Apple acknowledges continuing 27" iMac screen issues

At the end of last year, customers who bought 27″ iMacs reported screen flickering. Apple acknowledged the problem and released a firmware update intended to fix it back in December. Unfortunately, the problem persists.

According to Ars Technica, Apple’s internal support system is aware of the continuing problem and working on a fix. Customers who complain about the issue are to be told that their faulty display can be replaced “…in about three weeks.” Note that the units currently for sale have a 3-week shipping time, so you might want to wait a month before making a purchase Ars suggests, and we agree.

The shipping delays began in December when Apple declined to comment on why, but discussion threads pointed to the display. The delay was pushed ahead even further in January, which is how we got to the present 3-week wait.

Here’s hoping this gets fixed soon and all you owners can enjoy your 27″ iMacs in all their non-flickering glory.

Apple apologizes for iMac delays, keeps mum on DOA / display issues

Apple apologizes for iMac delays, keeps mum on DOA / display issues
Some contrition is better than none, we suppose, and upon being probed about lengthy delays on top of two-week shipping times for its slick 27-inch iMacs, Apple has this weekend tossed its expectant fans an overdue apology:

The new iMac has been a huge hit and we are working hard to fulfill orders as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience or delay this may cause our customers.

Considering the 27-inch Core i7 machines are both the major attraction of the latest iMac refresh and the source of the most headaches for Apple, it’s quite appropriate that the company would address its failure to make more prompt deliveries, but we’re troubled that there’s no further acknowledgement of the widespread issues plaguing those who have received their deliveries. Ah well, we’ll take what little corporate humility we can find, and if you’re fretting about your own machine, you can check it out for some of the more common defects at the link below.

A review of the iMac 27" Core 2 Duo: yep, it’s still an iMac

A review of the iMac 27" Core 2 Duo: yep, it’s still an iMac

Though users in general—and Mac users in particular—are quickly moving to a notebook-dominated world, Apple’s iconic iMac remains a strong seller in the desktop market. And for good reason: aside from the obvious portability offered by a notebook, the sleek machine offers more bang for your buck than a mobile, but without any of the ugliness that typically comes with a desktop machine. Apple’s latest iMac offerings continue this trend by refining the cosmetic aspects of the machine and adding just enough new stuff on the inside to make things interesting.

It has been just over two years since Apple last revamped the iMac’s design, and the refinements are largely worth it. The new iMac now comes in three processor flavors and two screen options. The stock processor options are either the 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (the same processor offered in the last-generation iMacs, but with faster configurations) or a 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 (the first quad-core option to come to the iMac), and you can get a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 as a build-to-order option. For the display, the 21″ iMac has now morphed into the 21.5″ (to accommodate a 16:9 aspect ratio), and the high-end option is now 27″.

Core i7 iMacs showing up DOA — including ours

Core i7 iMacs showing up DOA — including ours

Apple’s new Core i7-based iMac might be a performance monster, but it looks like it’s having some problems getting out of the gate: in addition to those previously-noted performance issues, a quick glance across Apple’s support forums and on other Mac boards around the web reveals that machines are showing up DOA and / or with cracked screens. We’re a little more familiar with the DOA issue, since the new i7 we just bought doesn’t boot at all, but the cracked screen issue seems to be equally common and mostly affecting the bottom left corner, from what we can tell. Now, our review Core 2 Duo 27-inch iMac is perfectly fine, and Chris Ziegler’s new Core i7 machine doesn’t have any problems either, so these obviously aren’t universal issues, but if you’re about to stick one of these under the tree for someone it might be wise to do some surreptitious testing first.

Apple posts DIY info for new iMac memory installation

Apple posts DIY info for new iMac memory installation

Filed under:

If you’re looking to do a DIY memory upgrade on your brand-spanking new iMac, Apple’s more than happy to tell you how. The Cupertino company has posted info in the Support section of its website telling people who aren’t afraid to pop the hood on the new 21.5″ and 27″ iMacs what kind of memory modules the new machines use and how to install or replace memory modules themselves.

While it’s not the public’s first look inside the machines, Apple lets the world know that the iMac (Late 2009) has four SDRAM slots, where to find them, and what types of modules will and won’t fit happily inside.

Would-be do it yourselfers can search Apple’s site for support document HT3918. Godspeed – and Godcaution – to you.

Hey Apple, Please Fix My Bricked iMac, Then Trash Microsoft

Hey Apple, Please Fix My Bricked iMac, Then Trash Microsoft

I upgraded three computers to Snow Leopard a couple of months ago, and one of them, a newish iMac, is still a brick. So even though I’m a loyal Mac user (just not the iPhone any more), it still pisses me off to see them trashing Windows 7 in a new Mac v. PC commercial. Windows 7 looks like a very solid operating system. It might even work just fine on that iMac. So give it a rest already, Apple. (via Erictric)
