iPad pre-orders estimated at over 150,000 — possibly ahead of iPhone rate

Let’s get this out of the way right up front: the estimated number of iPads sold in the first 72 hours is nowhere near official. And if the numbers hadn’t been scraped together by a well known amateur Apple analyst who regularly trumps the pros then we’d be skipping the fruits of his black magic algorithms altogether. Nevertheless, Daniel Tello (aka, Deagol), has applied his proven approach of extrapolating Apple web order numbers to come up with a 120,000 total for first day iPad sales that slowed to 152,000 after 72 hours (not including iPads reserved for pick-up). Tello told Fortune, “My best guess, although very tentative given the early stage and few data we have so far, would be that they hit the 1 million unit milestone by the second week after it ships.” For those keeping track, it took the original iPhone 74 days to hit 1 million. Quite an accomplishment if these numbers pan out (and that’s a big if!) considering that only 3 to 4 million tablets are sold globally each year.

TUAW at Big Nerd Ranch: now taking (app) requests!
TUAW at Big Nerd Ranch: now taking (app) requests!
More coverage of TUAW’s inside look at developer boot camp. See below for notes & disclaimer.
It’s Wednesday at Big Nerd Ranch. I’ll get to meet a few of the personalities behind the ranch today, as well as meet up with some blogger friends from Atlanta. Victor is even going to stop by … it’s like visitor’s day, except without the rehab or prison part.
We’re well into learning to make use of the unique features of the iPhone SDK now. Yesterday we covered CoreLocation, the accelerometer, more Interface Builder and programmatically creating interface elements. I’ve done a little of this before, but I’m also learning solid memory management techniques, coding conventions and other areas that I definitely needed work on. My classmates are really starting to dig into their own projects, and I’ve put together a couple small ones of my own. I haven’t come up with a great idea for a larger project yet, though, and I’d like your help with that.
My only request is that it make use of at least one special hardware feature of the iPhone (compass, accelerometer, etc.). Beyond that, I’m just looking for unique ideas from our readers for an app that would be useful to as large an audience as possible. If this app makes it to the App Store, it will be given away for free, so leave me some suggestions in the comments and I’ll get working on something we can all share!
In order to give our readers the first-hand account of what it’s like to experience developer boot camp, Big Nerd Ranch has permitted Brett to attend complimentary classes and has provided transportation/lodging assistance. Other than those considerations, no sponsorship or advertising relationship exists between BNR and TUAW. This series is not an endorsement of BNR’s programs or teaching methodology.

TUAW Tip: Veency remote controls your iPhone from your Mac
TUAW Tip: Veency remote controls your iPhone from your Mac
Filed under: Hacks, Tips and tricks, Odds and ends, iPhone, Jailbreak/pwnage
Reader Kevin C. sent us a tip the other day — he recently got a Bose SoundDock II, which is a nice little speaker dock, as a Christmas gift, and he wants to know: with his iPhone sitting all the way across the room, is there any way he can control the iPhone from his Mac? Obviously there are lots of ways to control your Mac with your iPhone, from Apple’s official Remote app to multiple VNC programs on the App Store. But in this case, we want to go the other way: control your iPhone’s iPod app with a Mac.
Turns out there isn’t a way to do it — unless you jailbreak your iPhone. Using Veency, a jailbreak app that Erica covered about a year or so ago, you can head into your iPhone from your Mac and do anything you want, from changing tracks in iTunes to even sending text messages. Here’s an older how-to on getting it working.
Unfortunately, other than that (according to our research — commenters feel free to jump in, of course), you’re out of luck — Apple is fine with sending commands from the iPhone to the Mac, but not the other way around. Maybe Bose needs to come up with a way for you to stream music over Bluetooth to their speakers so you can keep your iPhone with you.
Update: Our commenters come through as always: Rogue Amoeba’s Airfoil will supposedly send audio from your Mac out to your iPhone, and while I haven’t tried it myself, we’re told that the Bose dock will then play that audio for you. So instead of playing sound on your iPhone, you can just send it music from the Mac and control things that way. And Jeff points out that Belkin makes a Bluetooth dongle, so you can stream music that way as well (and just carry your iPhone with you). So there’s a few solutions to try.

Microsoft retail store opening in AZ copies freely from Apple Stores
Microsoft retail store opening in AZ copies freely from Apple Stores
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Retail, Found Footage
The day is Thursday, October 22nd. You’re in Scottsdale, Arizona, and you walk into a brand new store being opened by a multinational corporation that produces technology products, including popular operating systems for computers and mobile phones, music/media players, and ‘cloud’ email and storage services for consumers.
As you walk into the store, employees in brightly-colored t-shirts cheer and applaud. The store is spacious, with large wooden tables placed far enough apart that the opening-day crowd, standing on a hardwood floor, isn’t packed into the place. At the back of the store is an “Answer Bar,” where you can ask questions about the operating system on your computer.
No, Apple didn’t open a new Apple Store in Scottsdale on the 22nd. Instead, this was the opening of the first Microsoft Store. As expected, the stores draw heavily on the highly successful Apple Store concept; the stores are opening near Apple Stores, the former real estate chief for Apple (George Blankenship) was hired to consult on location and placement of the stores, and Microsoft has even attempted to hire away Apple Store managers to run their retail outlets.
The personal shoppers are a blatant rip-off of Apple’s Concierge concept, and Personal Training is an echo of Apple’s One-to-One training. The Microsoft Store website has similarities to the pages for individual Apple Stores, down to a scrolling list of in-store classes and events (the list for the Scottsdale store is empty at this time).
It’s fascinating to see that Microsoft has decided to copycat the Apple Store concept, but it remains to be seen if the execution will be as successful for Microsoft as it has been for Apple.
