Six supposed new Archos models rendered for your speculative enjoyment
Six supposed new Archos models rendered for your speculative enjoyment
Archos hasn’t seemed to secure much love for its latest, the Archos 9 tablet, so maybe it’s going back to what it does best for its next suite of products: a quintet of mostly straightforward players along with a titillating new flavor of the Archos 7. First is the simple and cheap Archos Key, a €20 device with 4GB of storage and microSD expansion. Then there’s the Archos Vision Slim, a slenderized and button-free version of the original Vision, again packing just 4GB of storage but going for €40 this time. Next is the Archos Yamaha Vision 2, with an internal amp from Yamaha, integrated stereo speakers, and undisclosed storage quantity and price. Next we have the Archos 4 Vision, a 4.3-inch touchscreen model with TV output, microSD expansion, and what was previously understood to be 16 and 32GB of storage. Finally, perhaps the most interesting, is the Archos 3 Vision Camera, an 8GB player with an integrated camera that could make this into a Flip-replacing media player — depending on the quality of the video, naturally. Oh, and did we forget to mention the purported Archos 7 with Android? It’s worth restating. All are decidedly rendery looking and naturally this is all unconfirmed, but golly don’t they look pretty.

Archos phone tablet in limbo, awaiting ‘at least two major operators’ to sign up
Archos phone tablet in limbo, awaiting ‘at least two major operators’ to sign up
Oh, Henri Crohas, you tease. In an interview with French site L’Expansion, the Archos CEO made reference to fate of the Archos phone tablet, saying that the company has built a device with strong multimedia capabilities… but it’s not gonna see the light of day without the support at least two major operators.Sad to hear, as the proposed specs — Android OS, 4.3-inch touchscreen, 1GHz ARM processor, 3.5G bands, 10mm titanium casing, and a possible front-facing camera — were mighty intriguing. In the meantime, keep dreaming of that Android-powered HTC HD2, k?

Archos 9 reviewed: too big, too slow, too ‘Starter’
Archos 9 reviewed: too big, too slow, too ‘Starter’
We hate to be the bringers of bad news, but it looks like the Archos 9 might be serving as a bit of a morality tale, showing why and how PC hardware and software might not be quite ready for the large form factor tablet experience. That’s not to say there aren’t some plusses to the device pointed out by UMPC Portal in its review, like the great build quality and style of the tablet, the sensitive, flush touchscreen, and some great connectivity, but the sum seems less than its parts. The primary blame can be laid at the feet of the 1.1GHz Atom Z510 processor, which is sluggish and single-threaded, and Windows 7 Starter, which is lacking in the standard Windows 7 tablet functionality. We don’t know all the reasoning at play here, but the result is a slow computer with a hacked-on touchscreen keyboard at a $550 pricepoint that doesn’t the hit handheld UMPC size sweetspot and can hardly stand against a netbook in cost or utility. Sounds kind of mean when we say it like that, doesn’t it?

Archos 9 tablet and its Windows 7 Starter Edition unboxed (video)
Archos 9 tablet and its Windows 7 Starter Edition unboxed (video)
It’s been a long time coming, but the Archos 9 is finally being unleashed wholesale upon the world. The 9-inch tablet has been delayed and had its price hiked, but if you haven’t leapt off the hype train yet you’ll be interested in watching the unboxing and initial impressions video after the break courtesy of UMPCPortal. The 60GB device contains a mere 1.1GHz Atom processor and has been unfortunately crippled with Windows 7 Starter Edition, lacking the cool tablet features that you might have wanted to use on a tablet device. A few times during this video the Archos is likened to the Joojoo, which will almost surely face some delays of its own before receiving a similar berth months from now. Overall it’s looking like a nice machine if you have the bank — and don’t want to do anything particularly processor intensive.

Dell tablet to debut at CES, says rumor
Dell tablet to debut at CES, says rumor
Dell plans to launch a tablet computer based around Google’s Android mobile operating system, says a report attributed to “multiple black ops sources” on gadget site Pocket-lint. Dell has not yet responded to requests to confirm or deny the rumor. And at this point, there are no photos of the rumored device on the Internet, only artists’ conceptions of possible tablet devices.
If the story is true, Dell’s tablet has a chance to beat another rumored tablet from Apple to market in a new product category.
Pocket-lint names the Archos 5 Internet Tablet as a competitor, but the Archos’ 4.8-inch screen is closer to that of a smartphone than a personal computer. Another startup effort, the JooJoo tablet, is based around a 12.1-inch screen. But the JooJoo is not yet in customers’ hands, and its $499 pre-order price seems a large amount of money to risk on an unproven twelve-person company’s first model.
A Dell tablet would, presumably, have a screen 11 inches or more measured diagonally, like the screens on netbook laptops. It would more likely sell in the $300 range to compete with netbooks, rather than the JooJoo’s $500 tag. Dell could possibly subsidize the price of the gadget, just as wireless carriers pay up to $350 of the price of the price of the phones they resell to consumers, in order to capture a larger market up front.
The tablet computer has, in the past year, gone from sure-to-fail niche product to eagerly-anticipated Next Big Thing. That’s because the original tablets were envisioned as workplace tools, replacements for the clipboards and binders carried by doctors and other knowledge workers.
The new vision for tablets is couch computing — a way to check Facebook, watch YouTube, and putter around the Web in a relaxed, leaned-back way rather than leaning intently into a desktop or laptop keyboard.
Do you ever lie down with your laptop on your chest? A slim, light tablet — basically a touchscreen with some miniaturized guts behind it and a wireless Net connection — would be much better than a folded-out laptop. It’s the computer you could keep tucked under your pillow.
Tablet Wars: Episode V – Dell Strikes Back at CES?
Tablet Wars: Episode V – Dell Strikes Back at CES?

A few days ago in a land a few time zones away, one tablet became another and, just for a moment, stopped everyone speculating about Apple’s entry into the decidedly fledgling market segment. According to reports Dell is similarly jumping aboard, said to be set to unveil a five-inch tablet running Android, specs that would put it right up in the Archos Internet Tablet’s grill and, thankfully, should mean a much lower price-point than the Joojoo. Word is we’ll all be getting a glimpse of the thing at CES next month, and knowing Dell it’ll probably be a very fleeting one.

Android-based Archos 5 Internet Tablet surfaces in 8GB form for $250
Android-based Archos 5 Internet Tablet surfaces in 8GB form for $250
The Archos 5 Internet Tablet hasn’t had the smoothest ride into the commercial realm, but thanks to a few firmware updates, the Android-based player seems to finally be humming along just fine. That said, not everyone’s interested in shelling out big bucks for a capacious version, which makes the latest edition perfect for those simply curious to see how Google’s mobile OS fares on a portable media player. The 8GB model has surfaced over at Radio Shack, bringing with it all the goods on the larger siblings but with far less internal space. The best part? That $249.99 price tag (and that little “In Stock” icon beside it).
