HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam Edition leaps off the runway and into our hands

HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam Edition leaps off the runway and into our hands

Paging all butterfly-admiring netbook lovers! With spring upon us, HP’s officially launching the Mini 210 Vivienne Tam edition that it previewed back at September’s Fall Fashion Week, and, well, it sure is unique looking. We actually got to take a peek at it a few weeks ago, and while the butterfly adorned cover may only appeal to a certain sex type, the gold covered keyboard is what you’d expect kings and queens to type on. Okay so, the design wasn’t really in line with our tastes, but at least we’re comfortable with the internal specs which are identical to the Mini 210 we recently reviewed (sans the Broadcom Crystal HD). And apparently the Mini should sound as good as it looks — HP’s updated Vivienne’s netbook with Beats by Dr. Dre audio software, which to date has only been found in the company’s Envy line. Interesting move, but of course it’s still very hard for us to understand why anyone would spend $600 on a netbook that’s got an extremely frustrating touchpad and only a three-cell battery — but we’d guess that it probably has to do with that whole ‘beauty is pain’ thing. The full press release is after the break.

Pioneer’s new CDJ-2000 DJ deck hopped up with a 6.1-inch LCD, new features

Pioneer’s new CDJ-2000 DJ deck hopped up with a 6.1-inch LCD, new features

Sure, it’s not quite as legendary as the Technics SL-1200MK2, but Pioneer’s CDJ-1000 has an impressive reputation of its own in clubs the world over, and the new CDJ-2000 looks to take things to the next level with a 6.1-inch 480 x 234 LCD and the ability to play music directly off USB and SD media. That huge LCD shows waveforms, album art, and song info, and it’s paired with a horizontal “Needle Pad” touchstrip underneath it that lets you drag directly to the part of the song you want — no more endless cueing. Oh, and there’s more: up to four 2000s can all share a single USB or SD music source with the Pro Link feature, there’s a MIDI mode that allows you to use all 35 buttons to control your favorite audio software, a new four-beat loop cutter that autoslices loops for you on the fly, and the whole shebang is bundled with Pioneer’s rekordbox music-management software. Yeah, it’s steep at $2,150 — $1,600 for the screenless CDJ-900 — but we so, so want one. Video after the break.

Video: iTunes 9 Home Sharing and iPhone app management

Video: iTunes 9 Home Sharing and iPhone app management

Sure, sure, the kids are all excited about iTunes LP and their fancy “lyrics” and “album art.” You know what we’re psyched about? Finally being able to manage our iPhone apps directly from iTunes 9. It works pretty much exactly as you’d expect, although we were able to make it do some minorly wonky things — and we’re psyched about the AutoFill-esque music sync feature that fills any remaining space on your phone with music.

We’re also pumped about the new Home Sharing feature in iTunes 9, which lets you transfer content between five different machines directly without screwing around with network shares or USB drives. We’ve seriously been waiting for a feature like this since iTunes sharing was first launched — it also works exactly like you’d expect, and we think it’ll make managing media across multiple machines much, much easier. Videos after the break!

Soundboard is a simple but useful sound board

Soundboard is a simple but useful sound board

In the video below I quickly run through the basics of Soundboard, from Ambrosia Software (makers of WireTap Studio and Snapz Pro, but they’ve made Mac apps and games for years). It’s just what you’d think: a series of buttons tied to sounds, just like you’d see at a radio station for live broadcasting.

But Soundboard brings the drag-and-drop ease of desktop computing to the table, and adds several small features that add up. Namely: quick editing and loop controls. Plus, you can route your audio using Soundflower, or just play what you want through speakers. Given the number of crank calls I made as a kid, I’m glad this wasn’t around.

Soundboard normally sells for $29, but there’s a free trial and you get 25% off if you’re a WireTap owner. Also, Ambrosia is encouraging Sound Byte users to switch over with a $19 deal for registered owners of that application. If you’ve ever wanted a live radio show like Dingo and the Baby, then Soundboard may be just what you need.

Incidentally, the screencast above was made using the excellent site, Screenr.com. If the video won’t play on an iPhone, just click here for the Screenr page.

Apple, record labels reportedly working to spur album sales with interactive goodies

Apple, record labels reportedly working to spur album sales with interactive goodies

Let’s face it, folks — the CD insert is no longer “the new hotness.” And besides, those wacky PDFs included with iTunes album purchases never did much more than take up valuable hard drive space anyway, right?. In an effort to get consumers to stop buying single tracks and start buying more filler entire albums, Apple has reportedly joined forces with EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Music Group in a project that’s being codenamed “Cocktail.” Financial Times is reporting that said initiative is considering adding “interactive booklets, sleeve notes and other interactive features with music downloads,” with one executive familiar with the situation saying that “it’s not just a bunch of PDFs; there’s real engagement with the ancillary stuff.” Of course, all of this should still be taken with a pinch of salt for now, as even the music companies mentioned above refused to comment. And given the tremendous indifference consumers have shown with that other interactive tech that’s being pushed so hard right now, we’re not even sure it’ll have the desired effect.

In related news, another sect of folks “briefed on the project” have stated that these new content deals could be launched alongside a new, full-featured “tablet-sized computer in time for the Christmas shopping season, in what the entertainment industry hopes will be a new revolution.” Adding fuel to the already raging fire, the report asserts that the “touch-sensitive device… will have a screen that may be up to ten inches diagonally,” and while it will “connect to the internet like the iPod touch, it’ll probably [do so] without phone capabilities.” You do know that Apple has been good for a music / iPod-related event right around September the past few years, right?
