Yoshi Akai’s Wireless Catcher senses nearby wireless waves, makes music (video)

What’s cute, cuddly, and makes all sorts of bizarro noises when it senses wireless waves? Yoshi Akai’s Wireless Catcher, of course! This analog synth contraption is simplistic in nature and complex in design, utilizing an onboard antenna to sense WiFi signals and then alter the sounds being outputted depending on signal strength and direction. It’s not exactly the symphony that Bach forgot to write, but it’s certainly beautiful in its own nerdy way. Have a look at the video past the break, won’t you?

AIS’ ultra-rugged PDA is so ugly it’s beautiful

AIS’ ultra-rugged PDA is so ugly it’s beautiful

Windows Phone what? Dell Mini who? Forget all that fancy nonsense, this is a proper mobile device. Running Windows Mobile 6.1, the AIS ultra-rugged PDA comes with a 3.7-inch QVGA (that’s a whopping 240 x 320 resolution, folks!) screen, a Marvell chip that might have been around when the wheel was invented, and the surprisingly robust WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G connectivity combo. Sidetalking has never looked this badass… or involved so many rubberized components.

Zenith 5-S-29 radio case mod explained in excellent, water-cooled detail

Zenith 5-S-29 radio case mod explained in excellent, water-cooled detail

The trusty old desktop rarely gets the love it deserves these days. Losing gamers to consoles and casual users to laptops, it’s left only with a loyal band of enthusiasts, but what a gorgeous bunch they are. Gary from the Bit-tech forums has put together the above case mod, inspired by the styles of early 20th century electronics, and reminded us all that big can be beautiful. He’s managed to fit an entire water cooling setup inside, while leaving no detail undocumented in a thorough, pic-heavy walkthrough of the project. We’d have considered the stunning wooden case enough by itself, but Gary has taken care of the little touches as well, as exemplified by the spare PCI slot covers matching the external construction. Hit the source link for images of the build and the insides laid bare.

Found Footage: Sir Patrick Stewart adores his iPhone

Found Footage: Sir Patrick Stewart adores his iPhone

Don’t even bother questioning why there is video of Jean-Luc Picard bashing Twitter and talking about his love for the iPhone, just watch and enjoy. Okay, okay, it’s from a PBS interview designed to promote some of their Shakespeare programming, but that doesn’t matter, really. All that matters is that Sir Patrick Stewart calls his “beautiful” iPhone “an extension of whom I am,” in the way that only he can.

He also bashes gaming, but only because he says it’s extremely addictive, so we’ll let that one slide. Here’s the really important question: Has anyone pointed out the Star Trek phaser [iTunes link] to him yet? What apps (besides the weather one, we guess) does he run on a daily basis?

Oh man. I’m tempted to just sit back and let you marvel at the beauty, history, innovation, and intelligence that is on display in the picture above, taken and posted by Robert Donovan on Flickr (and be sure to check out the alternate view, too — I actually like the alt view better, given that it shows all of the ports over time). But just in case you’re wondering:
  • Unibody 13″ 2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro
  • 15″ 400Mhz G4 Titanium PowerBook
  • 15″ 1.25Ghz G4 Aluminum PowerBook
  • 15″ 2.5Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro

Amazing stuff — think of the engineering, manufacturing work, and design arguments that went into those little bands of metal, and all of the good work and art that has since been created with them. Beautiful.

The Most Beautiful Woman Beauty Tips for All of Us

Here’s a little free beauty advice: You are the most beautiful woman that has ever walked this earth. You are a veritable goddess who reigns over her domain with a luster and shine that other woman have only dreamed about. You are a princess. You are a queen. You are an empress. Your beauty warms your domain like the sun warms the land. Your beauty illuminates the sky far brighter than any star. Beauty tip experts will tell you the single most important aspect to your beauty is your own knowledge that you are beautiful.

Three completely free beauty tips. Look in the mirror and notice what a beautiful eye color you have. Stand in front of a full length mirror and admire three things about your figure. Take pictures of yourself with your digital camera or web cam, and create that portfolio of you – and a little more beauty advice here: admire that portfolio often, add to it whenever you can.

No you are not conceited. You are the reason you are beautiful . . . or you are the reason you are not beautiful.

The natural beauty tips we all need to start with our own self esteem and self-image. Beauty starts right at home – in your heart and soul. If you look in the mirror and see only your faults, or see nothing but faults, you will portray them, knowingly or unknowingly. Reverse that bad habit – start seeing all the things that are right with your own natural beauty.

Now onto some more beauty advice. Walk across a room in your heels and favorite skirt or dress: your shoulders are thrown back, your head is held high, your hair and skin are glowing. You feel good. You look good. Your smile radiates out to all that gaze upon you. (even if it is only the sofa and chair – shine for them). You are a Super Model. And you look it every step of the way.

Now that you feel like a million bucks – you look like a million bucks.

You are ready for some more free beauty tips. Make putting on your face creams, lotions, perfumes and make up a luxurious experience. Set your bathroom or bedroom up so that you feel pretty when you go in it. Make sure you have good lighting – not too harsh, not too different from the lighting that you are normally in. Have your favorite beverage. Experience the moment of beautifying yourself.

One final Beauty tip: Enjoy yourself when you are putting on all the things that you have found that work especially well for you. Smile at yourself as you do your creams and foundations. Remember, you are the empress of your own domain. You are the most Beautiful Woman. It all begins with your attitude.

Kodak selling OLED display business to LG, cross-licensing like there’s no tomorrow

Kodak selling OLED display business to LG, cross-licensing like there’s no tomorrow
It was always hard to comprehend Kodak as a display technology company while maintaining a zero presence in the TV or monitor industry, and now, after developing the first OLED material way back in the 70s and plenty of beautiful displays since, Kodak is getting out of the OLED game. They’re selling to LG, who first inked a deal with Kodak back in March for using Kodak technology, just started selling a 15-inch OLED in November, and hopes to have a 30-inch display out by 2012. Kodak calls its IP portfolio for OLED “fundamental,” so even if this doesn’t speed up LG’s time to market, it might give it some significant cost advantages in the long run. Speaking of patents, Kodak and LG have also entered into a “broad” cross-license agreement to dip into each other’s patent portfolios, and the two companies could last be seen skipping merrily, hand-in-hand into the sunset.
