Samsung’s 3D BD-C6900 Blu-ray player now shipping, for real
The last we heard of Samsung’s BD-C6900 Blu-ray player it was up on Amazon for a pre-order — and then it was mysteriously gone again. We’re not sure whether anyone clicked the button quickly enough to get one of those into their shopping cart and onto their credit card statement back then, but even if you missed out then it is actually shipping now. At least, it is according to Amazon, which lists the thing as “In Stock.” The price is still $399.99 and for that you get 1GB of integrated memory, “explosive 3D capabilities,” DLNA streaming, and of course that lovely skylight to show off the spinning blur of your latest library addition — or Netflix rental.

PlayStation Network down, so are lots of PS3s
PlayStation Network down, so are lots of PS3s
It’s unclear exactly what’s going on at the moment, but it appears that the PlayStation Network is down and causing a whole host of related problems for PS3 systems, including 8001050F error codes, game crashes, corrupted trophy info, and even the complete inability to launch certain titles. There’s no ETA on when things will get back to normal — looks like it’s gonna be a Blu-ray kind of evening for PS3 owners out there.

PS3 getting 3D firmware update this Summer
Get your active shutter glasses ready: your PS3 is going to go 3D this Summer. In conjunction with the release of its 3D BRAVIA LCD sets, Sony is planning to release updates to turn the PS3 both into a stereoscopic 3D gaming platform, in addition to a 3D Blu-ray compatible movie player. Sure, we knew Sony was planning to give us 3D sometime this year, but now that we’ve got a summer time frame we can plan our wardrobe decisions according — jean cut-offs, here we come!

Maingear introduces F1X gaming desktops with overclocked Core i7 CPUs
Maingear introduces F1X gaming desktops with overclocked Core i7 CPUs
It’s no Shift, but Maingear’s new line of F1X gaming rigs are still delightfully potent in their own right. Starting at $2,249 (F1X 200) and sailing well north of $5,149 for the top-end F1X 500, this trio of desktops runs on a 64-bit copy of Windows 7 and packs an 80GB SSD boot drive, an overclocked Intel Core i7 CPU and an optional Blu-ray burner. The big fellow touts a 3.6GHz OC’d Core i7-975, 12GB of DDR3 memory, a 1.5TB Western Digital storage drive, 6x Blu-ray writer, a closed-loop watercooling system, 1,000 watt power supply and twin ATI Radeon HD 5870 GPUs (1GB). The other guys step things down just a wee bit, but you can rest assured that today’s latest games will be handled with ease should you snag any of ‘em. Speaking of which — they’re only available from Tiger Direct, Circuit City (the website) and CompUSA, so don’t waste your time looking elsewhere for a better deal.

SlipCover helps make case icons for your media
SlipCover helps make case icons for your media
Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Cool tools, Odds and ends, Freeware

Here’s a cool app we haven’t mentioned yet here on TUAW — SlipCover is an app that will help you put together some beautiful icons for your Mac’s media files, from DVDs to video games or anything else that needs a cool looking icon. The app itself revolves around “case” files, which are basically templates like the Blu-ray, PS3, and Xbox 360 branding on their DVD cases, to which you can then drag and drop other media on to (for example, put a Watchmen movie poster on a Blu-ray “case,” and you’ve got an icon that looks exactly like a Blu-ray version of the DVD), and then your media files on there to apply the icon automatically. No more hunting around through file names or weird previews of your media — you can just browse through a Delicious Library-style set of thumbnails to find whatever you want to watch.
Now, you may say that you just get all your media from iTunes, and that those come with thumbnails and covers already, and that’s a fair point. But for those of us who obtain media from all over the place, it’s nice to have a way to make it look all professional and purty. Slipcover is a free download over on their website.

Asus Eee Box 1501 with Blu-ray on its way to Switzerland
Good news, everybody! If you’re looking into one of Asus’s Eee Box 1501 nettops but weren’t exactly into the built-in DVD burner, well, better days may be ahead. It looks like a new version of the 1501 is on its way, this time packing Blu-ray. In case you’ve forgotten the specs, the Eee Box 1501 packs NVIDIA’s Ion chipset, an Intel Atom 330 dual-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and an HDMI port for good measure. There’s no official word on this yet, but the release of the Blu-ray boasting updated nettop looks likely for Switzerland in the near future, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information.

Samsung launches R30 and R80 series of laptops with a touch of Color, dose of Blu-ray
Samsung launches R30 and R80 series of laptops with a touch of Color, dose of Blu-ray
If Samsung’s latest cadre of netbooks don’t have the oomph for your professional mobile computing needs, perhaps you’ll find the new R30 and R80 series models more to your liking. The R430 and R530 laptops are 14- and 15.6-inch laptops both relying on Intel’s Core 2 Duo T6600 processor, 320GB hard drives, and 4GB of DDR3 memory, and good ‘ol GMA 4500MHD graphics. The R480, R580 and R780 models are 14-, 15.6-, and 17-inch, 16:9, LED-backlit models rocking Core i5 430M processors. Storage gets bumped to 500GB on this series, while the larger of the two get GeForce GT graphics as well as Blu-ray drives. All entrants in both series offer 802.11b/g/n wireless and are available with Samsung’s “Touch of Color” hues, which will surely earn you some jealous looks in the boardroom. Both R30 models will set you back $670, the R480 is $849, R580 is $949, and the range-topping R780 is, curiously, $20 cheaper: $929. That and the R30 models are available now. The other two R80s arrive in March.Samsung launches R30 and R80 series of laptops with a touch of Color, dose of Blu-ray originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 11:33:00 EST.
