Dell Adamo XPS alive and kicking, back for order on Dell.com

Well hello again, Dell Adamo XPS. Though the incredibly thin and uniquely designed laptop disappeared from Dell.com last week and we received official comment that it was a “limited edition product with a finite number of systems available,” the Adamo XPS has reappeared in its $2,000 glory on the company’s site. According to Dell’s blog, it was merely just a move to restock the inventory and direct customers to retailers that had fresh stock — well why didn’t you just say that Dell! And do not fear about the Adamo brand, Dell reports that all is well as it starts to apply the design to other lines, just as we saw yesterday with the Vostro V13. We’re still a bit confused by the reappearance, but it sure is good to see you again, Adamo XPS. We wish you a long successful life with many many price drops.

Leaked Dell Streak flyer shows multitude of color options, confirmed specifications

There’s no denying that the Mini 5 is real, but up until now, we’ve had to provide all of our own promotional material. At long last, it seems as if the suits in Round Rock are finally getting around to crafting the first advertisements for the upcoming slate, and while we knew about the 5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, capacitive touch front buttons, front-facing VGA camera (for video chatting) and the 30-pin docking connector, we weren’t aware of Dell’s plans to reveal a slew of vivacious color options. If this here flyer proves legitimate, we could eventually see the Mini 5 available in an array of premium finishes and hues (thanks, Design Studio!), and we’re hoping for a few different spec builds as well. So, are you opting for the pink, or are you crossing your fingers in hopes that Dell allows you to print that embarrassing shot of you and Mr. T on the rear of one?

Update: Oh, snap! We just landed a few more official slides from an internal Dell document, and it’s safe to say that the company is going to call this beauty the Streak. Or, at least that’s the internal codename. Better still, it looks as if it’ll launch with an Amazon content partnership, which will bring a Kindle e-book reader app, Amazon MP3, Amazon video streams and pretty much any other material that Amazon sells in digital form right to the slate. C’mon now — how’s about a ship date and a price?

Dell jazzes up Vostro lineup with new look and Core 2010 processors, keeps prices in check

We’re starting to bank on the small business-oriented Vostro for a really compelling blend of features and price. Sure, it’s usually not the sexiest kit on the block (though the Vostro V13 would beg to differ), but it’s hard to argue with the stellar pricetags. Dell’s just thrown down a big 3000 series refresh to the Vostro lineup, with the Core i5 and Core i7 options across the line, and even a Core i7 Quad Core option for the 17-inch Vostro 3700. And it isn’t just spec upgrades — the 13-, 14-, 15- and 17-inch boxes all are available in silver, red or bronze, and are made of fairly sturdy stuff. Though the 17-inch 3700 is the mightiest of the bunch, we’re particularly taken with the 13-inch 3300 which starts at $699 and boasts a rather thin chassis, onboard optical drive and Core i5 power. Thankfully, all of the models are available with discrete graphics options, ramping up to a 1GB NVIDIA graphics option on the 3700. It sounds as if there will be some killer deals to be had, and you should be able to configure these puppies on Dell.com starting today. Benchmark, Others Store $9 Million In Scale Computing

Benchmark Capital is placing a rather hefty bet on Indiana-based SAN startup Scale Computing – they’ve led a $9 million Series B round of financing and Partner Bill Gurley joins the company’s board of directors.

Existing investors Blue Chip Venture Company, CID Equity and Spring Mill Venture Partners also participated in the round.

Scale Computing sells storage hardware – actual machines with a proprietary software layer – to mostly small and medium sized businesses. The low end product is 3 Terabytes of usable storage for around $10,000, and additional storage can be purchased and added to the cluster from there. The company, which competes with HP’s Left Hand Storage, Dell’s EqualLogic and others, now has over 100 customers, says Gurley, and is growing fast.

Today in Tales from ASUS we bring you the story of the 10.1-inch Eee PC 1005PR. While we didn’t catch this one hiding out in the overflowing CeBIT booth, it appears big A has gone and swapped out the screen on the 1005PE for one with a 1366 x 768-resolution and tucked a Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator inside, which means the little lappie should be able to handle some YouTube HD (at least after you download 10.1 Beta 3). Nothing special apart from that, as it’s standard netbook down the line: 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450, 1GB of RAM, and 320GB hard drive. No word on pricing or availability, but we’re guessing it’ll probably come in at under $400, like the Dell Mini 10 and HP Mini 210. It may not be a bad deal in the end, but we’re still holding out for the Ion 2-equipped 1201PN and for ASUS to someday slow down the frenetic pace of Eee PC iteration.

Details of Twitter Ad Platform Emerge

Peter Kafka of All Things Digital has come out with some more details, which he says come from “people who have been briefed by the company”, about Twitter’s expected advertising platform. According to Kafka, the platform will be primarily search based, distributed via third-party applications and will appear in the familiar 140 character tweet format.

He makes sure to include a caveat, because there’s been a bit of confusion since reports of an “imminent” launch the other day, but the details mesh with what we’ve heard so far.

“Everyone I’ve talked to cautions that the plans are evolving and that there are plenty of details to work out,” Kafka writes. “Including a launch date, though it seems as if the first half of this year is a very safe bet.”

When we first wrote about the ad platform this week, it was based on an article in MediaPost, which reported that a Twitter ad platform was “imminent”. Since then, Seth Goldstein, who led the talk on which the reports were based, has back pedaled, saying he was only referring to a November statement by Twitter regarding its advertising future. Goldstein since called MediaPost’s article “speculation“, but this seems to only apply in relation to the time frame. Anamitra Banerji, head of product management and monetization at Twitter, is still on record with MediaPost as saying that the company is working on an ad platform, which is currently in the test phase.

According to Kafka, this is what we currently know about the developing ad platform:

  • Ads will be tied to Twitter searches, in the same way that Google’s (GOOG) original ads did. So a search for, say, “laptop”, may generate an ad for Dell. The ads will only show up in search results, which means users who don’t search for something won’t see them in their regular Twitterstream.
  • The ads will use the Twitter format — 140 characters or less — and will be distributed via the third party software and services that use Twitter’s API. The services will have the option to display the ads, and Twitter will share revenue with those that do.
  • Twitter will work with ad agencies and buyers to seed the program, but plans on moving to a self-serve model, like Google offers, down the road.

The details jive with what Banerji told the MediaPost at the meeting in question.

“We don’t think of ourselves as a Web site — essentially it’s a platform,” Banerji said. “We don’t really control the ads or the way the tweets are viewed and then consumed. We are completely open around other people innovating around us. Ultimately, publishers should have choice. But the one area of concern for us — and that’s if bad ads get identified in Twitter — it’s a problem for us in the long term. So, we should do whatever we can to encourage positive behavior.”

An ad platform that leaves the appearance of advertising up to the program just calls out for a freemium model within third-party Twitter apps, where paying users could avoid seeing Twitter advertising. Or perhaps we’ll see the emergence of more open source Twitter applications as advertising begins to appear in our previously ad-free apps.

So while reports of Twitter unveiling the ad platform at SXSW may be a bit premature, it seems that there is no question that it is in the works and will take on many attributes of Google’s AdWords program.

Dell’s refresh of the Mini 10 didn’t exactly knock our socks off when we got a chance to spend some quality time with it last month, but it did prove to be a solid performer and did as advertised, playing back 1080p content with aplomb — so long as you did it within a player that could make the most of a Broadcom’s Crystal HD accelerator. Now you have a chance to try it out for yourself, with Dell announcing the machine is shipping and, at $409 with a six-cell battery and a 250GB hard drive, it won’t break the bank either. Just steer clear of Quicktime for movie playback and get the most recent Flash beta on there pronto, yeah?
