KaleidoVid turns your iPhone into a video kaleidoscope
Filed under: App Store
KaleidoVid is the latest app from David Barnard of App Cubby. Working with Layton Duncan of Polar Bear Farm and Dave Keller of rocket, David decided to have some fun and make a “delightful” app. We got to see an early demo of KaleidoVid at Macworld Expo, and have been anticipating its release.
If you played with a kaleidoscope as a kid, you’ll be familiar with this app. Instead of mirrors and beads, KaleidoVid makes use of the iPhone’s camera. To use it, simply turn it on and point the camera in any direction, then move the iPhone until you find a pattern that you like.
From there, tap the screen to put a snapshot into your Camera Roll, or share your creations with Twitter, Facebook or email. Tap the screen again to resume playing.
it’s surprisingly fun and more of a toy than a game (I had to pry it away from my kids). KaleidoVid is available in the App Store now for US$0.99. Check out the gallery below for screenshots and some of my better creations.

Sony opens idyllic new retail store in Nagoya, Japan
Sony opens idyllic new retail store in Nagoya, Japan
We heard back in January that Sony was looking to reface itself somewhat by introducing a minty fresh retail look that takes a note or two from the Apple and Microsoft shops already in existence, and for those lucky enough to find themselves in Nagoya this weekend, you can check it out in person. March 13th marked the opening of the all new Sony Store Nagoya, and with an ample of amount of glass, white demo stands and black overhead signs, it’s certainly one of the more seductive retail shops that we’ve seen. We’d bother knocking Sony for following instead of leading, but considering just how far the brand has fallen over the past couple of years, we’re just stoked to see it putting forth an effort to turn things around.

GDC 2010: Civilization V probably Mac-bound (eventually)
GDC 2010: Civilization V probably Mac-bound (eventually)

The rep was noncommittal, as you might expect, but he did say that every single previous version of Civilization has eventually come to the Mac, and that Civ V would probably not be an exception. He didn’t have a timeline, but given the recent arrivals in the world of Mac gaming, I’d guess that it’ll be sooner rather than later. The game’s not due out until fall on PC, but I’ll keep an eye out for it. Here’s hoping that Valve’s big announcement will encourage other great game companies to hit our platform as early as they can.

Transformers: War for Cybertron shows how it all began
Transformers: War for Cybertron shows how it all began
![]()
Cybertron isn’t just the homeworld of the Transformers… it is a Transformer itself. It was the first Transformer. In War for Cybertron you get to explore the Civil War between the Autobots and the Decepticons as they blast their way across the planet. At GDC we were treated to a long demo of the game, and yes, it looks good.
The characters were given all-new designs, and some of them will in fact be made into toys. The game takes place before Optimus gains his “Prime” designation, and shows his early days of gaining the trust of the Autobots; we get to see just how he learned to be a leader on the battleground. On the flip side of things, the game explores how Megatron met Star Scream. “We also explore why Megatron keeps this guy, who is basically a back-stabber, around,” we were told. This game is taking the Transformers lore back to basics, and filling in some serious holes.

Notice the Windows alternative in HP’s slate device. This is a good thing.
We have written repeatedly that Windows itself is one of the main reasons why touchscreen computers have never caught the general public’s attention. The interface just wasn’t designed for finger input. Like it or not, that’s the truth. Windows was designed to be used with a mouse, and to a lesser extent, a pen or stylus.
That’s fine. Windows 7 works great. I’m writing this on a Win7 machine. But I hate Windows on my tablet computers for the aforementioned reason. It’s also the reason I’m very apprehensive of the upcoming onslaught of slate computers. I’m afraid that wonderful hardware will be passed up in favor of the disappointing iPad because of the interface. But Adobe gave me hope today in its demo of Flash and Air on the HP slate device.
Windows Phone 7 Series mockup changes slightly, Zune menu making a comeback?
Windows Phone 7 Series mockup changes slightly, Zune menu making a comeback?
So Microsoft’s Charlie Kindel posted up a long blog post about Windows Phone 7 Series and app development just now, and we couldn’t help but notice the WP7S device mockup he used is noticeably different from the stock press shots we’ve been seeing and the actual devices we’ve gotten to play with. That’s a totally different hardware trim, for starters, and there’s a Zune-like menu on the right– on the builds we’ve seen scrolling to the right reveals the app list. And that map on the bottom has been moved up a couple rows from where we’ve seen it on demo builds — which is unfortunate because it’s so wildly ugly in comparison to the rest of the 7 Series interface. Now, this could actually be an older mockup, not a newer one, so we’re not reading too much into this, but it’s clear that Microsoft is still making a ton of tweaks to the WP7S interface as time goes on — hopefully we’ll see some final results at MIX.

Project Natal prototype spotted on a makeshift Gorillapod stand, sensing your every move
Project Natal prototype spotted on a makeshift Gorillapod stand, sensing your every move
We’re not sure if this is a hint toward the final form factor, or merely the simplest conglomeration of parts available to get working Project Natal sensors in the hands of developers, but The Seattle Times has posted a picture today a developer prototype of the motion-sensing unit. The seems clearly slimmer in proportion than the soundbar-styled renders we’ve seen thus far, but also quite a bit different than the hacked together hardware used for the Jimmy Fallon demo of the tech. Of course, the fact that the assembly has been slapped atop a Gorillapod makes it hard to believe this is near-final hardware, but it’s still fun to see this stuff as evolves toward our living rooms.
