VIZIO Super Bowl ad pushes internet connected HDTVs in a big way

VIZIO Super Bowl ad pushes internet connected HDTVs in a big way

We weren’t sure exactly what Beyonce, David Goes to the Dentist and Chocolate Rain all had in common, but VIZIO squeezed them all into its Super Bowl ad. Still striving to remake its reputation from being merely a cheap HDTV manufacturer to a premium one offering lots of features, the ad (embedded after the break) shows how it’s bringing “the best of the internet” with VIZIO Internet Apps. We still need to see if its picture quality will measure up and whether the widget experience has gotten any better (read: faster) in 2010 to be truly convinced, but a slick ad never hurt.

Thanko USB dental device will help prove you still need a dentist

Thanko USB dental device will help prove you still need a dentist

Oh, the joys of self-diagnosis. Thanko’s unleashed a USB dental “microscope” to let you check out the inside of your own mouth in great detail — because you’re so much more knowledgeable than a real dentist, right? This puppy’s got six LEDs plus a small CMOS camera so you can shoot JPEGs / BMPs or 1,280×1024 resolution vids of your champers then check them out on your home computer. Of course, the sample shots (which are disgusting and after the break) inexplicably show a closeup of someone’s scalp, demonstrating that this USB badboy has a variety of uses, all of them pretty gross. Is there something wrong with us if we just don’t want to see our bodies in that much detail? It’s only available on Thanko’s Japanese site for the time being, and costs in the neighborhood of $80, but we have a feeling that it’ll show up in the States anyday now… as soon as Oprah gets wind of it.

Barry Diller Still Doesn’t Like Twitter, Still Can’t Stop Talking About It

Barry Diller Still Doesn’t Like Twitter, Still Can’t Stop Talking About It

A couple of weeks ago IAC Chairman and CEO Barry Diller was telling the elite crowd at the Allen & Co. Sun Valley conference that he was “pessimistic about Twitter’s prospects for making money.” A couple of weeks later and he’s singing the same tune, this time to the elite crowd at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Pasadena.

In an interview with Andy Serwer, Diller admitted that he didn’t really understand the service and doesn’t use it himself. He said it was for people who want emote real time information like “I’m going to the doctor now,” “I’ve left the doctor now,” and “I have a cavity,” and that it doesn’t seem like a natural advertising platform. “It’s not exactly for me” he said, “I don’t go to the dentist.”

He does admit that it is a “very strong” real time communication device. But he just can’t get much more excited than that. Maybe he’ll take another look if Twitter ever hits those massive revenue projections.

Full video is below. Sorry for the low quality, Fortune will likely have a clean high definition version soon and I’ll swap it out.
