We’ve seen blow-hard electronic music makers in the past (one particular didgeridoo hack comes to mind) but still, when one makes us take note we feel like we just have to pass it along. Onyx Ashanti is an American living in Berlin and a one-man band to boot. His instrument of choice is a Yamaha MIDI wind controller for triggering audio and the TouchOSC app for iPod touch for controlling PureData audio processing. And the music he makes from the two is pretty, pretty wild… see for yourself after the break.

TV networks continue to resist iTunes price cuts

Apple has been courting US TV networks recently in a bid to get them to drop episode pricing from its current level of $1.99 down to $0.99. The New York Times reports that, predictably, many TV networks are resisting Apple’s push for lower episode prices, even though iTunes’s initial $0.99 per song price point is arguably what made purchasing digital music palatable to consumers.

Music sales through the iTunes store have fallen off recently, at least partially because of record labels’ demands for a price hike to $1.29 per song for popular tracks. Meanwhile, though TV shows have been available for download in the iTunes Store since 2005, only 375 million shows have been downloaded in that time — compared to nearly 9.5 billion songs downloaded over the same period. With a reported 125 million iTunes Store accounts, that equates to an average of 76 song downloads per customer compared to a paltry 3 TV episodes downloaded.

The Times states that “television production is expensive, and the networks are wary of selling shows for less.” However, analysts have stated that TV downloads through iTunes represent a “marginal” or “niche” portion of the market, and this is borne out by the relatively low download numbers. TV episodes are already available from a number of other (legal) sources, and all of them are less expensive than iTunes: free over the air, free over Hulu (in the US anyway), for-pay via a cable subscription, and for-pay via purchases of TV seasons on DVD.

As one example of iTunes’s extremely uncompetitive pricing for TV shows, Season 5 of House, M.D. costs $39.99 on iTunes in Standard Definition, and that’s for the TV shows alone; the same season currently costs $24.49 on Amazon for a DVD box set complete with many special features not available on the iTunes Store. Even if the studios still think charging an extra $15 for digital versions of the same season of the same show is worth it to consumers because of the convenience of one-click downloading, based on the relatively low number of downloads thus far, it’s pretty clear consumers don’t feel the same way.

Although TV networks are reportedly resistant to price reductions, unless they can find a more compelling way to sell digital versions of their shows based on content, the only way they’re going to get more people to download more shows is by budging on the price. Apple has reportedly pitched a $30 per month “subscription” model for popular shows, which could be a compelling alternative to cable TV for many consumers. TV networks haven’t dismissed this proposal outright, but they are experiencing “trepidation” over it according to the Times. However, considering that spread over five years the amount of money that all studios combined are making per year off iTunes Store downloads equates to less than the three-week gross of a popular summer theatrical release, it seems like they have very little to lose.

Macmillan’s US CEO, John Sargent just confirmed that Amazon pulled its inventory of Macmillan books in a powerful response to Macmillan’s new pricing demands. Macmillan offered the new pricing on Thursday, just a day after Apple announced Macmillan as a major publishing partner in its new iBookstore — a revelation that certainly factored into the discussions along with Skiff and other e-book distribution and publishing models. During the meeting with Amazon in Seattle, Sargent outlined what he calls an “agency model” that will go into effect in early March. Under the terms offered, if Amazon chose to stay with its existing terms of sale, then it would suffer “extensive and deep windowing of titles.” Amazon’s hardball response was to pull all of Macmillan’s titles from its Kindle site and Amazon.com by the time Sargent arrived back in New York.

Macmillan claims that its new model is meant to keep retailers, publishers, and authors profitable in the emerging electronic frontier while encouraging competition amongst new devices and new stores. Macmillan’s model gives retailers a 30% commission and sets the price for each book individually: digital editions of most adult trade books will be priced from $5.99 to $14.99 while first releases will “almost always” hit the electronic shelves day on date with the physical hardcover release and be priced between $12.99 and $14.99 — pricing that will be dynamic over time. So when Steve Jobs said that Apple’s and Amazon’s prices would be the same, he was almost certainly referring to the $12.99 to $14.99 e-Book pricing originally rumored by the New York Times — not the $9.99 price that Amazon customers have been enjoying so far. Funny how Jobs, the man who once refused to grant the music labels’ request for variable pricing on digital music so that Apple could maintain a low fixed $0.99 price per track, is suddenly the best friend of a new breed of content owners. Guess the old dog just learned a new trick, eh?

When Apple introduced the iPod in 2001 — some 250 million units ago, as Steve Jobs noted — it began with a laser-like focus on digital music. Swap out a hard drive and FireWire port for a cassette collection, and the product was clearly the reinvention of the Walkman. The first Switched On in 2004 pondered the iPod photo as a stepping stone to video. And by 2007, the iPhone and iPod touch had become capable of playing a broad array of content and would soon be able to extend their capabilities dramatically via apps.

Nonetheless, while the iPhone and iPod touch were nearly as close cousins as the 3G and non-3G flavors of the iPad, they were each rooted firmly in the existing categories of smartphones and MP3 players and positioned against products in that space. Despite its limited app support, nobody thinks of the Zune HD as a handheld tablet; it’s a digital media player that competes against the iPod touch.

Dave Smith’s name is as revered in the synth business as those of Tom Oberheim and “Handsome Ron” Casio. Having had his hands in everything from the Prophet 5 synth to developing the MIDI specification to his own company (Dave Smith Instruments), the man has given electronic musicians plenty to be thankful for. The boutique’s latest, the Mopho Keyboard (seen here in prototype form at NAMM 2010) takes the existing Mopho synth module — a pretty sweet deal with its sub-octave generators, audio input (you know, for modulating stuff), and feedback options — and adds a thirty-two key keyboard and a whole mess of controls. Like original, this new Mopho has a 100 percent analog signal path, ships with a sound bank editor for both Windows and Mac, and it sounds pretty, pretty bad ass. Apple Has Acquired Lala

Earlier today we covered rumors that Apple was in talks to acquire streaming music service Lala. Now New York Times tech reporter Brad Stone has tweeted that it’s a done deal. He writes, “Apple has acquired digital music startup Lala. Now updating our story”. You can find the NYT story here.

This could be bad news for Lala users. It’s unlikely that the innovative deals negotiated by Lala will survive through the acquisition. For over a year, Lala users have been purchasing the rights to stream their music an unlimited number of times for ten cents per song. If the deals with the music labels go up in smoke, Lala may lose the right to stream those songs. In other words, all the money users have been spending on web songs may go down the drain. If the deals are nullified, hopefully Apple will renegotiate them to at least cover existing purchases until it releases its own streaming music service. We’ve reached out to Lala but have yet to hear back.

Likewise, this may well affect the Lala music gifts that have been recently offered by Facebook, and it could also harm the Music OneBox service Google recently launched (though Google can still rely on MySpace/iLike for its song streams).

Stone writes that Apple is interested in Lala because of its engineering talent and technology, and that it was Lala that initiated the discussions. From the Times:

One person with knowledge of the deal, but who was not authorized to discuss it, said that the negotiations originated when Lala executives concluded that their prospects for turning a profit in the short term were dim and initiated discussions with Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president in charge of iTunes.

This person said Apple would primarily be buying Lala’s engineers, including its energetic co-founder Bill Nguyen, and their experience with cloud-based music services.

The deal makes sense. It seems inevitable that Apple will eventually launch its own cloud-based streaming music service. And that’s exactly what Lala is — an iTunes in the cloud, with some interesting pricing mechanics.

A few other interesting things to note. This acquisition comes a little more than a month after Lala was integrated into Google’s OneBox and Facebook’s gift store. Lala may well have been viewing these launches as last-chance efforts to find a path to profitability. Given these reports that Lala’s “prospects for turning a profit in the short term were dim”, it looks like those launches may not have gone as well as Lala hoped.

Hailed as the first true DJ MP3 iPhone / iPod touch app in the world, Amidio’s $19.99 Touch DJ program (available now) enables users to independently manipulate two MP3 or M4A files, including scratching, looping, positioning, equalization, effects and pitching. The “visual mixing” requires all sorts of tapping and sliding, but the on-screen UI seems pretty elegant from what we’ve seen. The only real knock on this is that there’s currently no way to get music from the iTunes library into the program; instead, you’ll be forced to reload tracks into the app’s own MP3 library. Still, for those looking to ditch the hard case and waltz in with a pocketful of boogie, this ain’t a half bad option. Check the demonstration vid after the break.

Yahoo Music veterans return with a music service for video production

dashboxDave Goldberg and Bob Roback ran Yahoo’s music group for much of this decade. Now, reports MediaMemo blogger Peter Kafka, the two have launched a music service for video production professionals. It’s called Dashbox.

Dashbox sells a subscription service that allows customers — presumed to be video production professionals or hardcore amateurs — access to a library of usable music.

Goldberg (left, in photo) is one of many former digital music executives I’ve talked to who thinks the music business is fundamentally broken, so at first blush it’s a tiny bit surprising to see him back in it again.

But he and Roback are essentially investing in an entirely different industry–it’s a business-to-business market that really hasn’t been affected much by the digital revolution. If you want to use a song in your TV show, you can’t steal it via BitTorrent or stream it for free on Spotify.

It may not be as sexy as providing consumers with all the free music they want, but it may end up being more profitable.
