NVIDIA says Optimus ‘works perfectly’ with Intel Wireless Display

Intel’s Wireless Display technology is undoubtedly impressive, but it does place a few specific requirements on the gear you’re able to use with it (mostly involving Intel hardware). As it happens, while Intel may not be talking it up (we can’t imagine why not), NVIDIA says that WiDi also ‘works perfectly’ with its Optimus discreet graphics technology. The two obviously weren’t designed to be compatible from the start, but NVIDIA says it “just works,” and doesn’t require any software or hardware changes. That’s apparently due to the unique way that Optimus interfaces with the integrated Intel graphics in a laptop, which effectively acts as a bridge between the WiDi system and the GPU, and makes it the only discreet GPU that will work with WiDi. ATI serves up DirectX 11-compatible Mobility Radeon GPUs, helps nerds fall in love

DirectX 11 has been chewed up and spit out by desktop GPUs over the past few months, but until CES 2010, laptops at large were left out of the raving. This week, AMD has introduced what it’s calling the world’s first mobile graphics with DX11 compatibility, and the Mobility Radeon HD 5870 — which just so happens to be featured in ASUS’ recently revealed G73jh — is leading the way. The HD 5800, HD 5700, HD 5600 and HD 5400 series are all new at the show, and each one comes with baked in support for ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology and helping tech-adoring geeks find their soulmates (as is clearly shown above). Motorola Droid and Dell Adamo latest to get Gorilla glass

Corning’s darn-near-impenetrable Gorilla glass certainly isn’t new — in fact, we spied it in a few of Motion Computing’s tablets just a few months ago — but it’s still not commonplace on mainstream gizmos. Yet. SmartPlanet sat down with Dr. Donnell Walton, senior applications engineer at Corning, in order to discuss the merits of the display technology as well as its importance in the gadget space. The discussion also mentioned that both Motorola’s Droid and Dell’s Adamo (not to mention Cowon’s S9 PMP) are sporting the glass, which acts to make displays “damage-resistant.” Not surprisingly, the company is seeing huge demand in the smartphone arena, where touchscreen-centric phones are being shoved into pockets at random and then costing manufacturers big bucks as return rates creep up. It’s a pretty interesting read if you’re into that type of thing, and yes, we did just give you permission to try and split your Droid display wide open in a moment of frustration. Just don’t count on Motorola to accept that as a valid excuse for your RMA.

Samsung and Uni-Pixel team up for better, cheaper TMOS displays

Uni-Pixel has developed a new display technology that could succeed LCD and LED displays, and if all goes according to plan we might see something come to market as soon as next year. Opcuity uses one layer of MEMS film in in a TMOS (multiplexed optical shutter) device for results that are said to be ten times brighter and sixty percent cheaper to manufacture than LCDs (which use five layers). Since TMOS displays are very similar to LCDs, existing manufacturing lines can be used — lowering start-up costs and rescuing older assembly lines in the process. According to the company’s CFO, the manufacturing process “subtracts from existing LCD lines–you just need to remove some equipment that is no longer needed.” Samsung and Uni-Pixel have teamed up to produce 4-inch displays using the technology, but who knows? Maybe Microsoft Research’s interactive office will become a reality sooner than you think.

Samsung’s 12 megapixel SCH-W880 made official

We might still have debates over whether the SCH-W880 represents a cameraphone or our newly minted category of phonecamera, but there’s no doubt about this: the Samsung AMOLED 12M is now official and coming to (at least) Korea in October. The specs align closely to yesterday’s info, with a 3x optical zoom, 720p video recording, dedicated camera controls, and a 800 x 480 3.3-inch AMOLED display grabbing the headlines. Touch AF makes use of the touchscreen to let you choose focus areas, while image stabilization and Smart Auto modes fill out the software side of the camera. That leaves us with scant little info on the actual phone, but you could probably fill those specs in yourself by now, right?
