Vertu taste on a Nokia budget: meet the N97 Mini Gold Edition

Phone manufacturers usually leave the gilding to jewelers and other specialty shops that are more willing to show complete disregard for taste and common sense than themselves, but once in a while, pure, unadulterated emotion gets the better of someone in a position to make product decisions — yes, even at Nokia — and something like this slips through the cracks. Meet the N97 Mini Gold Edition, which is pretty self-explanatory: it’s an N97 Mini with 18-carat gold on the important bits. It’s coming to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia at the beginning of next quarter; pricing in Poland will run 2,499 zloty (about $851) unlocked, which is a bit of a premium over the 1,999 zloty ($681) charged for the standard model.

PSP Go scores its first mod job, a handful of white LEDs find a new purpose in life

Who knows what it is about the PSP that engenders such a loyal following of hackers — both on the hardware and software side. Some of the hardware hacks we’ve seen are no doubt more impressive than others, but they’re all united in a common disregard for warranties and for the most part a deep affection for LEDs. The first PSP Go mod we’ve seen, done up by roro3030 over at AcidMods, keeps things simple with some strategic, tasteful white LED placement. It’s all internally powered and pretty seamless, and provides a nice jumping off point for a community that will be no-doubt eager to consume the PSP Go as a new challenge — even if the rest of us are busy making frowny faces at that endlessly derided price tag. DIY wearable computer: now you don’t have to go to MIT to look like a total nerd in public

We admit it: despite our general disregard for the benefits of higher education, we’ve always harbored deep jealousy for those incredibly intelligent jerks at MIT’s Media Lab, traipsing around Massachusetts in their incredibly great wearable computers. Well, now that a MicroPCTalk forum member has built his very own wearable computer from a few spare parts lying around the house, we can finally put aside those futile dreams and get to work on our very own nerd-badge-of-honor. Mr. Fiveseven808 took a VAIO UX, Myvu Crystal wearable display, a bevy of Bluetooth peripherals and a iDEN i425 handset for connectivity. Sadly, his UX has since died, but there’s more UMPC where that can, and those elitist MIT types can’t keep us down forever.
