Prepare for an iPad App Explosion: Developer Activity Up 185%

Recent data from mobile analytics firm Flurry shows iPhone OS developer activity has increased by 185% since Apple announced their upcoming slate computing device known as the iPad earlier this year. By measuring new application starts within the Flurry community, the firm was able to determine significant increases in developer activity, including the largest spike ever in their recorded history during the month of January after the announcement occurred. The growth continued in February and now the company reports that a large proportion of the new applications they are seeing are custom version of existing applications tailored specifically for use on the iPad.

When Apple began taking pre-orders for the iPad on Friday, March 12th, the Apple.com website was updated with new information about the device. One of the most significant reveals was that iPad applications would soon have their own dedicated section within the iTunes App Store. The website text reads:

Browse a section of the store that features apps designed specifically for iPad. You’ll find hundreds that make the most of its large display, responsive performance, and Multi-Touch interface.

Although current iPhone applications will work on the new Apple device without modifications, developers who want to take advantage of the larger screen could use the updated iPhone SDK (software development kit) to modify their apps in order to release custom iPad-only versions. Now it appears that those who chose to do so will be rewarded for their efforts by having their apps made more visible via this new section of the iTunes Store. Considering that the number of  iPhone apps now in existence is somewhere near 140,000, being able to achieve this increased visibility will allow developers “the opportunity to establish an early presence on this new device and drive more downloads,” says Flurry.

Last week, we took a look at some of the iPad applications we’re looking forward to, including things like comic books, magazines and games, but there’s clearly a lot of others we haven’t even anticipated yet. We’re only days away from knowing what those will be: Apple’s iPad will be available for sale starting April 3rd, and along with its launch, the new iPad App Store will go live as well.

Another optical wireless experiment shows us that LEDs will beam your future downloads

Beaming data with light is hardly a new thing, but lately we’ve seen a number of attempts at making it rather more usable and, more interesting, rather more speedy. We’re starting to get the feeling that those maybe/maybe not dangerous microwave-based systems have had their days numbered. The latest to beam bits with blinkenlights is a team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications in Germany, which will be showing its stuff at the always happenin’ Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition in two weeks. The team was able to use a commercial LED and get an impressive 230Mb/s transfer rate, which doesn’t compare to the gigabit Penn State managed or 500mb/s Siemens pulled off, but those were done using rather more specialized hardware (like the Siemens rig pictured above). It’s interesting stuff, and we’re looking forward to see the commercial applications for this tech, but we do have one nagging question: what if you want to surf in the dark?

iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 3 available now

The new beta version of the 3.2 SDK (beta 3, for those of you keeping track) is now available for download. The Apple developer site will likely be getting slammed over the next hour or two, so plan your downloads accordingly. The beta is available to all paid members of the iPhone developer program, with at least the $99/year membership. You will need your credentials to sign in and download the new SDK.

As usual, the new beta SDK is under NDA, so please go check out the details for yourself to get further information about the changes between this beta and the last. Good luck, and happy programming!

Update: 6PM Pacific. It’s baaaaaaaack.

Update: Here then gone? Readers report that Apple seems to have pulled Beta 3 for the moment and when I returned to Apple’s iPhone developer site, I saw the same. Watch this space. We’ll update as we find out more.

Update: This was not an accidental upload, per Michael Jurewitz, the Mac and IPhone Applications Frameworks and Developer Tools Evangelist:

Confirmed: Apple upped its App Store over-the-air download limits

Confirmed: Apple upped its App Store over-the-air download limits

Although Apple’s just-released iTunes Connect guide for App Store developers (version 5.3) reminds them that over-the-air downloads for app purchases are still limited to 10MB, users are reporting that Apple may have quietly changed this policy. As the screen shot here (sourced from Italian website AllMobileWorld) shows, the standard 10MB complaint appears to be updated to a 20MB limit.

This is, as yet, the first TUAW has heard (or, more literally, seen) of the matter, but the screen shot does not appear faked. Given that Apple updated the iTunes Connect material on Tuesday, this could have simply been an oversight in the developer documentation that does not reflect the new policy.

Have you seen this dialog? Does it say 10MB or 20MB for you? Let us know in the comments, and do mention which carrier you are using in case it is an European-only phenomenon.

Update: We have now confirmed the change with carriers in multiple countries. One report from Denmark indicates that users there remain at at 10MB limit.

Thanks, everyone who tipped us about this

Apple’s App Store said to have 99.4 percent of all mobile app sales, more like 97.5

Apple’s App Store said to have 99.4 percent of all mobile app sales, more like 97.5

The latest research from Gartner indicates that, for the year 2009, only 16 million app sales were executed on mobile devices not bearing the infamous bitten apple logo. In reporting this data, Ars Technica inadvertently conflates Apple’s latest announcement of three billion apps downloaded with the notion of three billion apps sold and pegs the App Store’s market share at a whopping 99.4 percent — but more realistic calculations still show it to be somewhere in the vicinity of 97.5 percent. Going off estimates (obtained by GigaOM) that a quarter of App Store downloads are paid-for apps, and taking a rough figure of 2.5 billion downloads in 2009, leaves us with around 625 million app sales performed by Apple, which comfortably dwarfs all its competition. Considering the fact 18 months ago there wasn’t even an App Store to speak of — whereas today Cupertino is gobbling up the best part of $4.2 billion in annual mobile apps revenue — maybe you can now understand why we’re covering every tiny drip of info about that mythical tablet.

App Store tops 3 billion downloads

App Store tops 3 billion downloads

Apple announced this morning that App Store downloads have officially broken 3 billion, and it happened in less than 18 months.

In a press release issued today, Steve Jobs said, “…this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”

The App Store broke the billion-download barrier in April and hit 2 billion in September. With all the new iPhones and iPod touches (estimated) sold in the holiday quarter, this number should only climb higher.

Part of the store’s success is perfection of the impulse purchase. It’s ridiculously easy to find an app while you’re in line at the bank for instance, do a bit of poking around and hit “buy!” Why not, it’s only two bucks!

Competitors have been launched, some more successful than others, but Steve’s right in saying that nothing else has matched the App Store’s success. Congratulations to Apple!

Mplayit Releases Most Shared Mobile Apps On Facebook Application

Mplayit Releases Most Shared Mobile Apps On Facebook Application

As more and more social app directories launch, data concerning the most shared and recommended mobile apps is beginning to emerge. We recently wrote about Chorus, an iPhone app that helps you discover other apps, which revealed the most recommended apps from their community. Today, Mplayit, a recently launched Facebook app that allows users to discover, share and recommend a variety of mobile apps, is releasing a list of its most shared apps on the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Mobile (Java) devices.

Mplayit’s directory of apps includes a dedicated page for each app where Mplayit will post videos of the app (created either by the developer or pulled from YouTube), a detailed description of the app and reviews. You can also click to buy the app from various app markets, including Apple’s App Store and the Android Market. Once you start clicking on various app and downloading apps, Mplayit will begin to recommend apps to you based on your behavior on the site. And you can share apps on Facebook and Twitter. The Facebook page also shows the activity that’s taking place in other app marketplaces, such as Apple’s App Store or the Android Market, to show users what apps are receiving the most downloads, reviews and more. Users will also be able to see the “apptivity” within their social network, so they can clearly see what apps their friends and family are most interested in.

Over the past few months, Mplayit says that iPhone owners were recommending apps to friends that help manage stress during the holidays or entertain themselves or children. Blackberry users were more focused on sharing info about apps for work or travel. And Android users were into shopping, as two barcode reading apps both landed in a list of the 10 most shared apps for the platform.

And there are some just plain odd apps that were also driving chatter and sharing in the social networking world. On the iPhone, the SuperCam app that allows users to monitor home surveillance systems was getting shared the most often. The Bible application for Blackberry was among the 20 most discussed and shared apps on that platform. While on the Android platform, an application that mimics Google reader was getting the most chatter probably because Google has not yet made available an Android version of this popular service. On the feature phone, its games, games and more games. Interestingly, Tiger Woods holiday troubles seemed to have had a positive impact on the mobile game that bares his name. It was the second most shared and discussed java mobile app over the holiday weekend.

Below are the respective lists of the most shared mobile apps on Mplayit:

Flurry: App Store Sees Record Breaking Christmas, 50% Growth From November To December

Flurry: App Store Sees Record Breaking Christmas, 50% Growth From November To December

As predicted here on MobileCrunch earlier this month, Apple rocked it this holiday season, and the early numbers are showing it.

According to Flurry, the biggest mobile app analytics company, iPod Touch download volume saw a nearly 1,000% jump in downloads on Christmas Day. Overall, the App Store saw a 51% increase in downloads from November to December (downloads only increased by 15% from October to November). Christmas also marked the first day that iPod Touch app downloads surpassed iPhone app downloads, which makes sense (the iPod Touch is a more common gift than an iPhone; more on that later). Furthermore, the Android Market saw a nice 20% bump in app sales as well, sparked primarily by an uptick in downloads from the Motorola Droid.
