TiVo turns the DVR into a Flash-based app platform

TiVo may have pioneered the home DVR market, but its leading position hasn’t helped it stave off competition from cable providers, who have offered bundled services that integrate with their broadcast offerings, and avoid the up-front investment in hardware. Tonight, the company has announced a revamped hardware and software combination that it hopes will help it regain some momentum. The new products feature greater integration with Internet content, increased interactivity, and better support for HDTVs, all run by an interface developed using Adobe Flash.

The new hardware comes in 320GB and 1TB capacities, and features cable card and coax inputs, plus a standard array of video outputs, along with support for a nice range of resolutions: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. Both of the new units included optical audio out, but the Premier XL, in addition to the larger drive, is THX certified, and comes with software that enables fine-grained adjustment of the home theater experience. Ethernet, USB 2.0, and eSATA connectors allow communication with a wide range of additional devices (a wireless N adaptor will be sold separately).

FiOS Mobile app comes to Android

Every decent DVR today supports remote scheduling via the web — well except Windows 7 Media Center — and Verizon’s FiOS TV DVR is no different. But of course web apps don’t compare to real apps like this new one for Android users. The new FiOS Mobile app features a guide for remote scheduling as well as VOD browsing so you can mark what you want to watch later, as well as parental controls and a free space indicator — something TiVo doesn’t even offer on the DVR itself. Of course there’s no way to actually watch content from your DVR, and we’re not surprised. Now before you get too jealous of Android users with Verizon’s FiOS TV DVR, we’d like to remind you that the FiOS DVR has a measly 160GB hard drive and no external disk support, and as you can see from the screen shot, FiOS users don’t have any free space left for new recordings anyway.

HAVA media streamer for iPhone available now

Just a quick note to all you HAVA Player enthusiasts: the iPhone app that the company announced at CES is finally ready for public consumption. Available from the App Store (of all places), the software lets HAVA owners control it all remotely — including cable, satellite, and your DVR. What’s more, you can stream your recorded programming right onto the handset for all those times when you can’t stand to be apart from Jim Kramer. Supports iPhone and iPod touch with (OS 2.2.1 or higher) and will run you $9.99. PR after the break.

Digeo purchased by Arris, promises continued Moxi development, sales and support

After a post-CES “streamlining” resulted in layoffs and left highly anticipated products like the Multi-Room HD DMR to never see the light of day the future of Moxi DVR builder Digeo has remained in doubt, but that’s all behind us as it has been acquired by ARRIS. Promising not only continued support for current Moxi customers but also plans to continue to develop and market the line of products, it appears the communications company sees this as a way to expand its own networking expertise. The cost to snap up Digeo’s IP, 75 employees and other assets? A mere $20 million cash – we expect to find out more details via conference call tomorrow, any questions you want answered about the future of Moxi? Let us know in the comments, whether this means the UI will get a makeover is already on our list.

Android-based Archos gets pictured, briefly priced by B&H

We still gotta wait until September 15th for the whole scoop, but B&H has gone ahead and spoiled some of the mystery of Archos’ Android-based Archos 5, giving the internet tablet its own listing in a number of different storage capacity options, pictures in tow, as well as a $130 DVR station. Prices are currently listed as TBA, but fortunately it looks like the fine fellows at ArchosFans managed to capture the page when there were more concrete dollar signs on each model, to the tune of $294 for 16GB SSD, $370 for 32GB SSD, $320 for 160GB HDD, and $420 for a 500GB HDD. In the DVR station pic we spotted “HD” listed in the video names, which gives us hope that even more of those February leaks are coming to fruition. Mitsubishi’s new Blu-ray DVRs have you covered, from super resolution to VHS

Mitsubishi has always tried to take a different tack with its Blu-ray recording DVRs in Japan — see its DVR-BF2000 model for evidence — and we’re sure someone’s glad to see them going the extra mile with these latest three models. The DVR-BZ330 combines a 1TB hard drive with the super resolution upconversion that promises to pull additional information from low res video via its Diamond HD chip. If that bit of video magic isn’t impressive(or believable) there’s always the similar DVR-BZ230 sans-Diamond HD and half the hard drive space, while true back compat freaks should opt for the DVR-BV530 with VHS playback (no recording, we know you had an LP tape you’ve been saving.) Expect these to hit the streets in October from ¥180,000 ($1,915) for the high end DVR-BZ330 to ¥120,000 ($1,270) for the DVR-BV530.

Touch Revolution’s household Android devices coming this year — it’s Hammer time!

When a former Apple product engineer mixes up some Google-juice with MC Hammer you’d be surprised at what you get. If you guessed a range of household Android devices sporting 4.3- to 10-inch touchscreens, WiFi, and Ethernet connectivity well, that would be weird… but you’d be right. Mark Hamblin, the founder and CEO of Touch Revolution who claims to have worked on the iPhone and iPod touch, breaks down the Touch Revolution product family into three major categories: 1) home control to manage lights, security, heating and ventilation, 2) media control for the TV, stereo, and DVR programming, and 3) home-based smartphones like the NIMble we played with at CES. The first Touch Revolution modules will launch later this year inside a range of devices that can be hand-held, placed on a tabletop, or even embedded in a wall. While not naming names, Hamblin says that the hardware and software will customized and sold by “companies with major brands” before the end of the year in the “US and elsewhere.” As for Hammer, that’s hard to say — but we’d buy pretty much anything he’d like to officially endorse.

DVR Remote 2 available, but you may want to wait

Stutsman Software has released version 2 of DVR Remote, an app we covered a while back that lets you use your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control for your TiVo Series 3 via WiFi.

One user, however, is reporting an issue with a Now Playing list that never ends — that is, its contents are repeated over and over again — but Derek Stutsman, the developer, is working on it. On the product’s page in iTunes (link opens iTunes), Stutsman suggests you may want to wait until he releases a fix before upgrading from 1.x.

New in this version is improved keyboard support, rewritten networking support to handle transfer interruptions, and a faster “Now Playing” list. Also included is support for skins. You can select from one of many attractive themes for your remote, or create one yourself. Pictured here is the “Starry Night” theme.

DVR Remote is available in the App Store for $2.99.
