Microsoft on copy and paste in Windows Phone 7 Series: ‘people don’t do that’
Microsoft certainly set off a firestorm of controversy yesterday with the revelation that Windows Phone 7 Series won’t have copy and paste, since it doesn’t necessarily line up with what the company has said in private before — and the issue seems to have gotten even more clouded as people have started hacking around the emulator. So let’s set the record straight on what we were told, since it wasn’t ambiguous in any way: Microsoft says leaving clipboard operations out was a conscious design decision based on user research showing that people don’t actually use copy and paste very often, and that instead 7 Series features a systemwide data detection service which recognizes things ike phone numbers and addresses so you can take action on them. Third-party apps can hook into this service, so that an email address can be routed to the email client of your choice, but there’s no copy and paste functionality. We specifically asked about Office and OneNote, and we were told that Microsoft’s research shows that people mostly want to view and comment on documents, not move things around. We also specifically asked if copy and paste was coming later and were told no, although we’d guess that it’s at least being worked on for a future version. Don’t take it from us, though — listen to Microsoft’s Todd Brix for yourself:

iPad won’t handle GSM voice calls — or will it?
Like the camera references, this could just be another case of vestigial SDK weirdness — but for whatever reason, devs have noticed (and we’ve been able to reproduce) a “Touch to return to call” bar in the iPad emulator just like you’d expect to find on an iPhone during a traditional GSM call. It certainly seems like Steve would’ve bothered to mention during today’s festivities if you could do something crazy like pair up a Bluetooth headset and go to town (and you’d need a voice plan on top of that $29.99 data anyway), so who knows: either Apple’s just made every UI element as adaptable as possible regardless of whether it’s applicable to a particular device, they’re planning a higher-res iPhone down the road, or they’re integrating the bar into some VoIP action. Or… you know, none of the above.

CrossOver Games releases version 8.1.0
CrossOver Games releases version 8.1.0
Filed under: Gaming, Software, Odds and ends, Developer, Snow Leopard

The folks behind CrossOver Games sent us a note that version 8.1.0 of their software has come out, and it’s got some nice upgrades for Mac and Linux folks who prefer to run their games in Windows almost-emulators (it’s based on Wine, and as we all know, Wine Is Not an Emulator) rather than Boot Camping over to the real thing. We tried out CrossOver Games a while back, and found it lacking in almost everything but Steam games, but actually that’s OK, because lately Steam has a lot of games going on. Accordingly, this new version has support built-in for the brand new Left 4 Dead 2, as well as fixes for Steam’s voice chat, a few upgrades for WoW on Linux and Guild Wars, and a couple of changes to ensure compatibility with Snow Leopard. Sounds like a nice solid upgrade — owners of the software can grab it for free, or you can try out the app for yourself from their website.
In case you don’t have the app yet, CodeWeavers also let us know that they’re giving away a Linux rig that’s the “ultimate” in… wait for it… gaming. Yes, putting together a Linux rig for gaming is like putting a UFC fighter on a dance show, but we guess stranger things have happened. Anyway, CrossOver Games will definitely help you play at least a few games on the decked-out rig, if you want a shot at winning the thing, all you have to do is pick up the software before December 1st. They’ll pick a name out of a hat, and if it’s yours, there’ll be an awesome ‘nix box headed your way. Good luck with getting smooth fullscreen Flash video to work. We kid! You Linux guys make it so easy.
Oh wait, what’s that? Flash on the iPhone? I have no idea what you’re talking about.

iJoyPad demoed on iPhone 3GS, full screen PSX games looking rather sweet
iJoyPad demoed on iPhone 3GS, full screen PSX games looking rather sweet
The iJoyPad has been floating around for a bit now, but we’ve never seen a full demo of the add-on gamepad. Well, it’s back in a video demoing its performance on an iPhone 3GS, using the psx4iphone emulator in full screen glory. The demo shows off Wipeout XL and Ridge Racer performing quite quickly and smoothly, and the iJoyPad itself seems totally functional — and while it’s a tiny bit clunky looking as far as we’re concerned, we’d still like to swipe one for ourselves. Hit the read link for the video.
