AT&T completes 100-Gigabit Ethernet field trial using new Cisco gear, proves it does care

Remember those network investments that AT&T was talking up just days before Time Warner slipped over an offer for help? Looks as if the firm wasn’t kidding around, but there’s still nothing here that should get you excited about more available bandwidth in the coming days. Utilizing that fancy new Cisco router, the carrier recently completed a live network environmental trial of 100-Gigabit backbone network technology (far more hasty than that 40-Gigabit stuff that’s around today), but we’re told that the tech isn’t expected to be ready for “commercial deployment” until the “next few years.” ‘Course, we suspect we should be struck by the notion that the internet may actually have the proper infrastructure to keep on keepin’ on once Hulu really does take over the world, but for now, we’ll just have to extract a bit more joy from those vague “little things” in life.

FIC outs Pineview-boasting SVE00 netbook

FIC’s just launched its new Pinetrail netbook, the FIC SVE600. This little guy (which measures 10.1-inches) isn’t exactly ground-breaking, but that Atom N450 is still new enough to spark a little interest, right? The SVE600 boasts the aforementioned 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a choice of an either up to 500GB HDD or an up to 32GB SSD, plus WiFi, BGN, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth WiMax, and HSDPA. You’ll also get your choice of either Windows 7 or Linux OSs. There’s no word on pricing yet, but we’ll let you know when we do. There’s another beauty shot after the break.

Sony still subsidizing US military supercomputer efforts

Consumers aren’t the only ones enjoying the PlayStation 3’s recent price drop. The US military has announced plans to buy 2,200 more of the game consoles, so that they can massively beef up the processing power of an existing, PS3-based supercomputer. A “Justification Review Document,” which has oddly been deleted from Google since I found it but is still available at this cache link, explains that, “the new PS3s will be placed in a cluster environment with an existing cluster of 336 PS3s by connecting each of the units’ one gigabit Ethernet port to a common 24 port gigabit hub.”

Kohjinsha’s 11.6-inch EX6 convertible tablet says XP, means Windows 7

With Windows 7 on the horizon, multi-touch support in tow, people are suddenly interested in tablets all over again; a form factor that didn’t quite revolutionize portable computing as envisioned by an enthusiastic Bill Gates showing that first prototype way back in 2001. And with an Apple event just weeks away (presumably), fanboys of both persuasions seem convinced that tablets are once more the future of mobile computing. Manufacturers are certainly on board. Case in point: Kohjinsha, that just announced its EX6 convertible tablet with 1366×768 pixels slathered across a 11.6-inch LED-backlit capacitive resistive touchscreen. Inside you’ll find a 1.6GHz Atom N270 and 945GSE chipset, up to 2GB of memory and 160GB of disk, 802.11n WiFi, gigabit Ethernet, a pair of front and back-facing cameras, 2600mAh battery, 2x USB, and slots for SDHC/microSDHC, ExpressCard 34 cards, and even DVDs. Unfortunately, it’ll be shipped with XP when it hits retail at the end of this month for ¥59,800 (about $635) — something we expect you’ll rectify on October 22nd. As to whether it’ll support multi-touch under Win7, well, anybody see the appropriate sticker?

ViewSonic’s VOT120 and VOT121 nettops suck in their guts for the camera

Unsatisfied with only having the tall and slim 130 and 132 nettops, ViewSonic’s newly announced family of hardware also features a pair of even more diminutive options: the VOT120 and 121. Snapped in the wild for your delectation, these machines are small enough to be confused for a well-filled CD wallet and come with WiFi, four USB inputs, gigabit Ethernet and DVI-out. While the 120’s standard netbook spec is nothing to write home about, the 121 does receive a (comparatively) potent 1.4GHz CULV chip and a HDMI output ’round back, making for an intriguing HTPC proposition. Prices in Taiwan are set for $304 and $423 respectively, but feel free to browse past the break for an inquisitive look at these miniature computers.
