Study: Internet Radio Reaching 32% of Households, Ereaders Are Hot, Newspapers are Doomed
L.E.K.’s Media Consumption Survey polled over 2,000 consumers, asking them about their general media “diet,” from ereaders to online video. The results? Ereaders are big, older folks are into the Internet, and online radio is finally reaching the mainstream.

Most of this isn’t huge news but the statistics are pretty striking. For example:

  • 32% of users listen to an average of 5.8 hours of Internet radio a week, a huge jump.
  • iPod owners consume 8.9 hours of media per week while e-reader owners consume 18.2 hours of new media per week. That means e-readers have a captive audience.
  • Folks aged 50-64 use 8.3 hours of Internet per week compared to 24-39 year olds who use it for 6.8 hours.

Korean 3D television broadcasts in Full HD just weeks away

Korean 3D television broadcasts in Full HD just weeks away

With LG predicting a 3D television market in excess of 30 million units by 2012 and Samsung busily promoting its related world’s firsts, you’d better believe that these powerful South Korean “chaebols” have their government’s full support when it comes to delivering 3D content. Just today the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) announced its drive to start beaming 3D broadcasts in Full HD quality sometime in 2010 — licensing begins in January with first broadcasts expected mid-year. Unlike those 3D satellite broadcasts tested in Japan and the UK, Korea will deliver its 3D content through its terrestrial networks. Of course, Korea’s pay-TV providers want in on the action too, with CJ HelloVision set to offer 3D content through its video-on-demand offerings in the next “week or two.” CJ HelloVision will initially target about 300 households with plans to extend the service to 1,000 homes by 2012. Viewers will need yet another set-top box to view 3D content likely limited to “cartoons” at first. Pricing has not been set and it’s entirely possible that 3D VoD titles will be free at first in order to build momentum and to ensure viewer lock-in of the all important child demographic.

Report: 12% of US households own a Mac

Report: 12% of US households own a Mac

A new NPD report says that 12% of US households now own a Mac of some kind. That’s a nice gain — just a year ago, back in 2008, the same stat was at 9 percent, so Apple has made nice jumps just in the last 12 months. But before you start crowing about Apple’s impending superiority, here’s another fact that might have you thinking twice: of those households, a whopping 85% also own a Windows computer. In fact, 66% of those Apple households actually own three computers or more. So many more Apple owners own more than one computer, and of those, it’s pretty darn likely that one of them is still a Windows PC. That’s certainly the case at my house (I own a Mac mini, a MacBook, and a PC), and I bet it’s true for lots of you Mac users as well.

There is good news for Apple in terms of iPods however: 63% of Apple-owning households also have an iPod on hand, though I’d question whether that’s chicken or egg: do they own an iPod because they owned a Mac or vice versa? Additionally, Apple users are more likely to have navigation systems in their cars, they’re more likely to earn over $100,000, and they’re likely to have twice as many gadgets as other users — 48 gadgets on average for Mac owners, compared to 24 for the average consumer household.

While those stats are interesting, none of them seem super surprising — Apple has a reputation for high-end gadgets, and so anyone who seeks out their products is going to pick up some other gadgets as well.

Verismo’s VuNow set-top-box finally gets movie streaming

Verismo’s VuNow set-top-box finally gets movie streaming

Verismo Networks may not boast the namesake of a Roku, Sony or LG, but its unassuming VuNow PoD just keeps getting more and more bonny. Priced at $99, this internet-to-TV media streamer makes it simple for simpletons to get web content onto their HDTV, and after snagging YouTube support last December, the box has finally nailed down a partnership that will bring bona fide films into households. Sonic Solutions, which has certainly been on a tear of late pushing its CinemaNow platform, has agreed to let VuNow users purchase CinemaNow programming, which includes material from over 250 content providers. We’re also told that this deal is far from the last we’ll see in the near future, though there’s no word on whether Netflix is next. If so, consider the VuNow game officially “on.” Full release is after the break.
