Apple paying back bonuses on cost of defective 27-inch iMacs
Apple paying back bonuses on cost of defective 27-inch iMacs
Filed under: Retail, iMac, Apple
Gizmodo is reporting that Apple has begun refunding up to an extra 15% of the purchase price of the 27-inch iMac to those customers who bought defective units.
The news broke yesterday with a UK-based Apple Authorized Service Provider/Reseller claiming that Apple is out of 27″ screens in Europe, and they’re dealing with a waiting list of customers already. So they’re now offering up (to only certain customers so far, not an official policy) not only a full refund, but an extra 15% on top of the price, roughly $300 on the cost of a $2000 iMac.
Gizmodo also points out that the refund doesn’t include sales tax or shipping costs, so some of the 15% covers that as well. You won’t be able to make money on this, but Apple is apparently offering up a small bonus to customers inconvenienced by the issues.
Earlier this week Apple released another firmware update to address the flickering screen issues with the 27-inch iMacs but it seems that has not alleviated all the issues.

Apple is delaying shipments of 27 inch iMacs
Apple is delaying shipments of 27 inch iMacs
Uh oh! It looks like there’s shipping delays and availability issues with 27 inch iMacs. It’s reported that these delays could be due to graphics issues with the GPU. Several Apple resellers are citing shipping delays when trying to order the models.
Apple made a brief statement to CNET tonight acknowledging the delays, but iMacs are showing a two week shipping delay on Apple’s online store, which might mean you won’t be able to purchase one in time for the holidays.
Graphics issues are nothing new to these iMac models. Some 27 inch iMacs also had issues earlier with graphic performance and Flash, which was fixed in the 10.6.2 update. The 27 inch iMac has also had a number of other reported problems before, from machines that have had broken screens, to iMacs arriving that simply don’t work.

How would you change Apple’s unibody MacBook?
How would you change Apple’s unibody MacBook?

Quietly unveiled alongside the 27-inch iMac and the Magic Mouse was this: Apple’s attempt to force the unibody construction that we’ve already seen used on its MacBook Pro into the lowly MacBook line. This 13-incher didn’t revolutionize Apple’s low-end laptop line, but it did add a pinch of style and an integrated “7-hour” battery while keeping the price tag steady at $999. We certainly had our fair share of gripes when testing this scuff-magnet out, but now that you’ve had nearly two months to toy around with your own, we’re anxious to hear what you’d do different next time. Is the build quality up to your standards? Are you still weeping uncontrollably as you search in vain for a FireWire 400 port? Is the 9400M GPU potent enough for you? Did this honestly deserve to be priced at a few hundies less? Feel free to unleash hot fury in comments below — maybe ole Steve will feel the heat.

Apple kicks butt, takes names in October desktop and laptop retail sales
Apple kicks butt, takes names in October desktop and laptop retail sales
Filed under: Retail, iMac, Apple, Macbook Pro
Boo-ya! Apple took the top honors in terms of desktop and laptop retail sales in the U.S. in October, according to market research firm NPD Group. As reported on CNET, the iMac line (refreshed in October) and laptops occupied some of the top slots in the list.
During the month of October, the new 21.5-inch iMac was the best-selling desktop computer, with the awe-inspiring 27-inch model in third place. Stephen Baker, who is NPD’s vice president of industry analysys, told CNET that Apple was helped by a rather dismal month for Windows desktops, since retailers were pushing existing inventory prior to the launch of Microsoft’s Windows 7.
In the laptop list, the 13-inch MacBook Pro model was the number one seller, with three other MacBooks filling the number 8, 9, and 10 spots for October laptop sales.
NPD’s numbers are pulled from online and retail store sales figures, but don’t account for direct sales from the manufacturer to consumers.

Core i7 iMacs showing up DOA — including ours
Core i7 iMacs showing up DOA — including ours

Apple’s new Core i7-based iMac might be a performance monster, but it looks like it’s having some problems getting out of the gate: in addition to those previously-noted performance issues, a quick glance across Apple’s support forums and on other Mac boards around the web reveals that machines are showing up DOA and / or with cracked screens. We’re a little more familiar with the DOA issue, since the new i7 we just bought doesn’t boot at all, but the cracked screen issue seems to be equally common and mostly affecting the bottom left corner, from what we can tell. Now, our review Core 2 Duo 27-inch iMac is perfectly fine, and Chris Ziegler’s new Core i7 machine doesn’t have any problems either, so these obviously aren’t universal issues, but if you’re about to stick one of these under the tree for someone it might be wise to do some surreptitious testing first.

Inside the new 27-inch iMac
Inside the new 27-inch iMac

You know by now that once Apple announces a new piece of hardware, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets their hands on one only to rip it up and tear every little piece out to see what’s in there. And that’s exactly what iFixit did with the brand new iMac — most of us would kill to get one and keep it, and they got one and killed it. But at least we can learn from their destruction: the LCD panel is the same resolution as the 30″ Cinema display, and the screen itself weighs 11 lbs. The hard drive sits right in the center of the machine, right behind the screen. And there’s probably more heat dissipation methods in there than you’d expect: six temp sensors, three fans, two heat sinks, and even a partridge in a pear tree. We’re not sure how that last one helps.
Overall, it’s a beauty. And the last twist is probably the most interesting — other than showing off your Mac-itude and lighting the area behind your screen, the Apple logo is apparently wrapped with an Airport antenna. Because the whole thing is encased in aluminum, that’s the only place to get a signal, and so that’s where they stuck it. Now when people complain that you’re just being trendy by showing off the Apple logo, you can tell them you’re actually just trying to help out the wifi reception.

The other new products that Apple released today
The other new products that Apple released today
Filed under: Peripherals, Portables, iMac
Surprisingly, the Mac mini, Magic Mouse, iMac, MacBook, AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule updates are not the only things Apple updated today. Several other products were updated today, which include:
- Apple Wireless Keyboard: This keyboard, the subject of several update rumors, did get revised today. It now only requires 2 AA batteries, down from 3 in the previous model.
- Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter: This adapter now has a aluminum connector, much like the one found on the 45 watt adapter for the MacBook Air; it should be more durable for use.
- VESA Mount Adapter Kit: This model for the 24 inch Apple LCD Cinema Display and the previous 24 inch iMac now supports the new 27 inch iMac.
Also, the wired mouse-formerly-known-as-Mighty Mouse — which is still available — was renamed to “Apple Mouse.” This is consistent with the trademark for Mighty Mouse (the computer mouse) being finally picked up by Man & Machine, instead of CBS and Apple.
Are you going to enjoy the improvements in these products? Let us know in the comments below!
