Sprint hacks $10 off its monthly mobile WiMAX pricing

Cutting the price of its mobile WiMAX subscription prices for the second time in half a year, Sprint’s confirmed a $10 drop in its monthly fee. The price cut, which brings the price to $59.99 for monthly CDMA / mobile WiMAX. Back in August the company dropped the unlimited 3G/4G service by $10, as well. A spokesperson for Sprint told Fierce Wireless that the price drop is in order to make the service a “no brainer” for its customers, and denied specific, recent rumors that Sprint may partner with Walmart for mobile WiMAX cells in all of its retail locations nationwide. Regardless, if you want to get in on a WiMAX deal, now might be a decent time to do it.

How would you change AT&T’s 3G MicroCell?

We know, we know — AT&T’s 3G MicroCell isn’t even out nationwide yet, but for those select markets that have access, we’re hoping you’ll chime in on the pros and cons as to enlighten the other folks before their time comes. By and large, the GSM femotocell works exactly like the Airave for Sprint, though this one does fully support 3G data as well as simultaneous voice and data usage. For those that have taken the plunge: are you satisfied with the value proposition? Is reception really any better? Have you ditched your landline yet? What would you change about the service or billing? Voice your opinion on the matter below, and remember, life doesn’t present you with many chances such as this. Wouldn’t want to waste it, now would we?

Borders pulls a B&N, offers free WiFi to all patrons

In the gory, never-ending war for book store supremacy, Borders has just tapped Verizon in order to match Barnes & Noble’s summer efforts to bring gratis WiFi to all who enter. Details of the arrangement are scant, but the takeaway is this: in “virtually all” of its more than 500 stores nationwide, Borders is hooking up with Verizon to bring free internet to anyone who sashays in (note: you literally have to dance upon entering) with a WiFi-enabled device. The service is expected to be fully rolled out by mid-October, giving you plenty of time to select the scarf and skinny jeans you’d like to be seen in by your fellow hipsters.

T-Mobile starts 21Mbps HSPA+ rollout in Philadelphia, nationwide in 2010

T-Mobile USA’s really kicking things into high gear, coming from behind (way behind, actually) on its 3G launch to become the first to bring 21Mbps HSPA+ here — and possibly the only one to do it, considering that its closest GSM rival is leapfrogging from 7.2Mbps HSPA to LTE. Speaking at 4G World in Chicago, T-Mobile’s Neville Ray has gone on record saying that its 3G footprint will be blanketed by HSPA+ next year and is actually already up and running in parts of Philadelphia; amusingly, he was apparently a little weirded out by AT&T’s earlier comments at the show that it’d have 90 percent of its 3G coverage upgraded to 7.2Mbps by the end of 2011, suggesting that was slow (we’d agree, but then again, considering how far behind T-Mobile still lags in raw 3G coverage, we’re not sure they’ve got room to talk just yet). If we had to guess, this huge push for mega-fast data has to do with investor discontent on the Deutsche Telekom side of things, so you can bet there are some crossed fingers out in Bellevue as this stuff lights up; now, just give us the world-class phone selection to match and we’ll be good to go.
