New Macs, something else tomorrow?

New Macs, something else tomorrow?

Engadget is the latest to report a rumor that’s been circulating for months: tomorrow may be the day that we finally see those new Macs we’ve been waiting on. John Gruber claims we’re going to see new MacBooks and iMacs (which we’ll rate as “expected”), updated Mac minis (wouldn’t be a huge surprise, though we haven’t heard that so much about that one, particularly not a mini bundled with Mac OS X Server — a very nice idea, though), and something called a “Magic Mouse,” as well as a multitouch trackpad accessory. I have to admit: those last two sound less likely than the iPod touch camera — while the new MacBooks and iMacs definitely wouldn’t be out of place before a holiday season, breaking out brand new accessories without an event to back them up isn’t really Apple’s style.

But then again, ours is not to judge: the rumors say new mice and some sort of multitouch trackpad, so that’s what we’re passing on to you. Believe it or not, as you will. We’ll of course be up and refreshing Apple’s store constantly here at TUAW — if anything new shows up there, you’ll see it here ASAP.

HP and Dr. Dre team up to shill a limited edition Envy 15

HP and Dr. Dre team up to shill a limited edition Envy 15

When we saw the HP-branded Envy leak a whole four days ago we certainly didn’t expect to get any news on the beast so soon, but ‘lo and behold! The new Envy is here, and we’ve been getting plenty of positive feedback from HP fanboys the world o’er regarding the new sub-brand. Who could find fault with a Windows machine that features everything we love about those new MacBooks, including the chicklet keyboard, unibody aluminum chasis, thin-and-light physique, multitouch trackpad, and all the Microsoft OS action you so obviously crave, wrapped ever-so-lovingly in a Hewlett Packard shell? We’ll tell you who: Lady Gaga. That’s right, the popular recording artist and all-around good American just found out that HP has teamed up with Dr. Dre to create a limited edition Envy 15 laptop and is a little perturbed that she wasn’t involved in the branding. How dare they think that a matte black chassis and bright red “Beats” logo would be enough to sell this bad boy? We’ll tell you what — if you feel for her plight, you might think about spending some of your heard earned cash on a pair of her headphones. The rest of us can feel content to peep the gallery below and think about what might have been.

Found Footage: The reality distortion field, caught on video

Found Footage: The reality distortion field, caught on video

Think Apple’s products are “really great,” “incredible,” “amazing,” “really easy” to use, “awesome,” “terrific,” “incredible,” “great,” and “amazing”? If so, it’s probably because Apple told you that’s what they were in last week’s presentation. The above video’s been making the rounds — it’s all of the adjectives cut out of the recent Apple event, and compiled together into a machine-gun lineup of just how Apple sets up their products.

Now, just because these words kept showing up and being used doesn’t mean there’s some malicious brainwashing going on here — it’s probably true that Apple really does think that their products are “incredible,” and “amazing,” and “really great.” And let’s face it, they’ve never really been real up-to-date on the language anyway. They probably could use a thesaurus: maybe at the next event, the new MacBooks could be “marvelous,” “extraordinary,” or “glorious.”

But it does show you just how much we’re shaped by what we see at these events — Steve’s and Apple’s enthusiasm for these things is infectious. Apple’s products really are amazing, but it doesn’t hurt that most of us sit down to watch, read, or listen to an hour or two of them telling us just how “amazing,” “incredible,” and “really great” they are.
