Nokia X6 Comes with Music and capacitive touchscreen: shipping now

What are you thankful for today? If you live in Finland or the UK and pre-ordered a X6 then you might be obliged to Nokia for having just set your new handset free. That’s right pilgrims, Nokia’s new flagship Comes with Music handset is now shipping. The X6 you’ll recall, introduces S60 5th to a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen riding 32GB of storage, a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, TV-out, and tweaked homescreen with a media/social-centric layout. The X6 lists for €450 (pre-tax and pre-carrier subsidies) — a price that ultimately includes the cost of Nokia’s struggling “all-you-can-eat” music service. Perhaps this is the device that finally gives the service legs? Maybe, but we’d start by following through on plans to strip the DRM.

Licensing pact a big step towards fixing EU music stores

Major members of the online music industry, including iTunes and Amazon, have signed an agreement with the European Commission to work towards more even and widespread music distribution across all of Europe. As part of the agreement, the music industry intends to do away with the limitations of the current licensing system so that music fans can have greater choice and clear usage rights, no matter where they are in Europe.

The agreement came after the fourth Roundtable on the Online Distribution of Music held Monday by Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes. Participants included Amazon, BEUC, EMI, iTunes, Nokia, PRS for Music, SACEM, STIM, and Universal. It was the first time the music industry has managed to agree on a common roadmap in Europe, which has been frustratingly segmented for years thanks to outdated licensing and rights practices in the EU.

Nokia Comes with Music US launch smartly pushed back to 2010

Not that most Americans could care, but Nokia is pushing back the US launch of its DRM-laden Comes with Music service into 2010. CWM, you’ll recall, is Nokia’s “free” all-you-can-eat music service that bundles the 12-18 month music subscription cost into the inflated handset price — although like any DRM music scheme, solutions already exist to break the CWM shackles. The delay is probably a wise move considering the weak state of Nokia’s US partnerships required to offset consumer costs, lukewarm response to its latest handsets, and the fact that most US consumers share a broad distaste for DRM music. We’d rather see Nokia launch late but with a compelling proposition than launch now in blind adherence to a timeline.
