A lava lamp and a Nexus One tested under 3Gs of force (video)

Neil Fraser, a true pioneer of science, wasn’t satisfied with just wondering whether a lava lamp will work on Jupiter. He opted instead to build a freaking centrifuge in the middle of his living room, strap an innocent lava lamp and a Nexus One to one end with counterbalancing weights on the other, and spin that monster up to find out for himself. His instrument was able to generate 3G of lateral force (despite the Nexus One’s G-Force reporting 2.0G due to a bug, now reported to Google), which is comfortably above the 2.5G gravitational pull that one might experience on the solar system’s biggest planet. Rogers rolls out fixes for 911 problems with Dream and Magic, cuts off data for non-upgraders
So Rogers and HTC have worked with the kind of hustle you don’t normally see from carriers or manufacturers to fix a rather dangerous glitch in their branded versions of the Dream and Magic causing calls to 911 to fail with GPS enabled — and needless to say, you’re going to want to apply the upgrade on the double. Why? Well, the problem’s so dangerous that Rogers has taken the unusual step of vowing to disable internet access altogether for anyone failing to apply the “mandatory” patch by 6AM today (but don’t worry, you should get it back as soon as you’ve upgraded). For their troubles, affected customers will be credited one month’s worth of data — and Magic owners will be delighted to discover that their phones have magically received HTC’s Sense UI as a result of this whole ordeal. All’s well that ends well, right?

Nexus One review

The Nexus One. In the modern climate of hyped (and over-hyped) smartphone launches, Google’s official entry into the phone-sales game has excelled in a department where many find difficulty: generating legitimate excitement. Of course, long before the name Nexus One or the recent bounty of pictures and details existed, the very concept of a “Google Phone” had been ingrained in the public conscience, predating even the Open Handset Alliance and Android itself; the company dabbled in the concept of direct sales through its offering of the Android Dev Phones 1 and 2 (alias Ion), but this time, it’s a public retail ordeal, not a couple of one-off developer specials. The genuine-article Google Phone is finally here — for better or worse.

The device, a Snapdragon-powered, HTC-built phone looks — on paper, at least — like the ultimate Android handset, combining a newly tweaked and tightened user interface with killer industrial design. A sleek, streamlined phone that can easily go toe-to-toe with the iPhone 3GSs, Pres, and Droids of the world, powered by the latest version of Android (2.1 “Flan,” if you’re counting), and hand-retooled by Google. But is it all it’s cracked up to be? Can the Nexus One possibly live up to the hype ascribed to it? And more importantly, is the appearance of the phone the death knell for the OHA and a sign of the coming Android autocracy? Note: The unit we have in hand is — by all appearances — a production model, save for the QR code imprint on the back, which is likely a employee-only Easter egg. How to break up in an online world—and avoid e-stalkers

In this age of electronic communications and social networks, breaking up with someone can be even more of an ordeal than it has been in the past. A divorce or major breakup can be messy enough without the added reminders about what your ex is up to every hour of the day or who he or she is going out with on the weekends. Plus, there’s always that risk that your ex is of The Crazy(tm) variety and is using your social networking updates to ensure that you cannot possibly move on with your life if he or she can help it.

For those who keep a tight leash on who has access to their Internet activities, the solution to this problem might seem obvious. Still, there are legions who don’t immediately think of the laundry list of Internet ties to cut when they end up parting ways with a significant other. (We have even heard from several readers about dealing with this issue.) It’s those people this guide is aimed at.

Nikon issues statement on second D5000 recall

It’s never a great feeling to get an expensive new gadget only to have it promptly ripped from your hands by a mandatory recall, but those that have gone through such an ordeal can consider themselves somewhat lucky, as Nikon has now issued a statement explaining its second recall of some already recalled D5000 DSLRs. That second go-round thankfully only affects only a “small number” of D5000 customers in Europe, who were apparently unfortunate enough to not have their cameras treated with a new “enhanced procedure” that’s designed to provide an additional preventative measure. From the sound of it, those affected should have already heard directly from Nikon, and will apparently have to only wait a “short time” to get their camera repaired, hopefully for the last time.

Court injunction puts sales of RealDVD on ice, hopes and dreams in purgatory

Something tells us Kaleidescape has a man (or woman, to be fair) on the inside, else United States District Court Judge Marilyn Patel is just downright trifilin’. In every visible way, RealNetworks’ proposed RealDVD player was exactly what Kaleidescape was, but for people with annual salaries far less than $9,854,392,220. Regardless of our opinion, a preliminary injunction has just been passed down from The Almighty in the robe, which blocks the sale of the RealDVD software here in the US. The six major movie studies filed the suit last September, alleging that it “illegally violated their right to restrict the use of their movies in digital form.” Evidently those that matter agree. A RealNetworks spokesperson took the time to vent their feelings on the whole ordeal, and since we know you’re curious, we’ve pasted it below for your convenience.

We are disappointed that a preliminary injunction has been placed on the sale of RealDVD. We have just received the Judge’s detailed ruling and are reviewing it. After we have done so fully, we’ll determine our course of action and will have more to say at that time.
