New Square Enix RPG coming to the iPhone this year

Filed under:

A job posting on a Japanese developer’s site has hinted that Square Enix will be releasing a brand new RPG on the iPhone sometime later this year. Media.Vision has posted that they’re seeking to fill a number of positions related to building an RPG on Apple’s platform in conjunction with Square Enix. The Final Fantasy Ring fansite says that the game will be called Chaos Ring, and will by produced by the same team that made the popular Wild Arms console series.

FFRing also says (via Japanese translation) that the game will be a 3D title, and it will feature a storyline concerning five pairs of warriors who fight to the death for the right to eternal youth. Each game stage will consist of a ring of battles with a boss in the center, and some choice in how the player takes on enemies — more challenge for more risk.

It sounds intriguing. Square Enix has been seeing some success with its older titles on the iPhone, and we know it’s got a few original titles already in the pipeline for Apple’s platforms. It’ll be great to see what they can cook up for the App Store.

XpanD X103 3D glasses universally compatible with 3DTVs, but not all wallets

XpanD X103 3D glasses universally compatible with 3DTVs, but not all wallets

During CES 2010. RealD managed to slide its 3D glasses in with most of the new televisions coming our way this year, but XpanD is continuing its promise to work with any IR-enabled set from any manufacturer (Samsung has already stated its glasses will only work with its TVs, Panasonic couldn’t confirm cross compatibility with other brands when we asked) with the X103 series. XpanD is claiming compatibility with “virtually any monitor capable of displaying 3D content”. Even with plans for 12 different colors and sizes for kids or adults it’s more likely you’ll end up in a caption contest than a look book rocking these, but as long as they get the job done they seem like a natural go to for additional pairs when they launch in June. The main problem? Pricing isn’t final but Chief Strategy Officer Ami Dror told PC Mag he expects them to run $125 – $150 — even if the local cinema uses active shutter technology, that’s a lot of 3D flicks before you recoup the cost and makes it nearly out of the question to grab a few spares for friends to watch.

CoolerBot photographs nature, gets its power from it

CoolerBot photographs nature, gets its power from it

If you’re into real life bunny wabbits and other such wildlife, but not a fan of the cold, wet and windy outdoors, what do you do? We’d say just boot up the console and shoot you some pixelated peoples, but Steve Norris’ idea might be just a tad more practical. He has authored the above mobile snap-station, which is equipped with an infrared video camera, a Nikon DSLR, and pairs of motors, 10Ah batteries, and solar panels. Power flows from the latter into the former to turn wildlife stalking into a pleasurable pastime for even the most indoorsy of folks. Video demonstration of the hardware after the break.

The gift of love; the gift of recycled Mac and iPhone jewelry

The gift of love; the gift of recycled Mac and iPhone jewelry

Are you looking for that perfect holiday gift for a loved one? Is that someone special a Mac geek or geekette? If so, then the clever people at PowerBook Medic have a wonderful gift idea for you!

They make a living out of repairing old Mac laptops and iPhones, and it’s apparent that over the years they’ve accumulated more than a handful of buttons from machines that need fixing. PowerBook Medic is now making earrings from iPhone home buttons (see photo at right) and the power buttons from aluminum, black, and white MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

These lovely personal accessories can be yours for only US$14.95 per pair, so it’s probably a good idea to order a complete set so the recipient doesn’t think you’re a complete cheapskate.

The company is also giving away 15 pairs of the iPhone earrings to lucky winners. Details of their Twitter-fied contest can be found here.

Caption contest: Palm strikes a pose in Spain

Caption contest: Palm strikes a pose in Spain

There are three things in this crazy world that scare the living daylights out of us: poor battery life, scratched screens, and seven-foot tall she-bots wielding Pres like concealed weapons. This, it seems, was the nightmarish scenario facing Madrid as it launched Palm’s first webOS-based phone this week.

Chris: “I’m being treated well, but please, it’s imperative that you buy this phone as expediently as possible.”
Richard Lai: “My other toy is the Pre.”
Ross: “It says if we don’t do exactly as it commands, the Spiders from Mars will return and destroy us all.”
Darren: “Geordi La Forge and I are like this.”
Josh T.: “So far they have treated me well, but I fear that could change at any moment. If you comply with their demand for 300 pairs of leather pants, they say I will be released unharmed.”
Thomas: “Sir, I assure you, this is exactly how they do it in America.”

HP’s 11.6-inch Mini 311 pairs Atom with NVIDIA ION graphics, Windows XP

HP’s 11.6-inch Mini 311 pairs Atom with NVIDIA ION graphics, Windows XP

Three great tastes that taste great together? We suppose we’ll find out soon enough. HP has stuffed NVIDIA ION LE graphics into the new (already leaked) Mini 311 netbook-ish PC, but instead of being forced by Microsoft to go Windows Vista or Windows 7 to get the new chip in there, HP has stood by good ol’ Windows XP. It comes with a big caveat, however: “Streaming HD video playback not currently supported,” and of course an Atom N270 processor is still an N270, no matter what graphics you pair it with — stay away from heavy Flash video, dear friend. The 11.6-inch WXGA screen dreams of something more, however, and the ION chip can decode HD video and output over HDMI. Of course, it’s hard to complain about the $400 starting pricetag.

Zoom Q3 ears-on: it’s like ‘Stop Making Sense’ saw your YouTube lip sync video and liked it

Zoom Q3 ears-on: it’s like ‘Stop Making Sense’ saw your YouTube lip sync video and liked it

What’s this blue monstrosity? A YouTube-happy concert bootlegger’s new best friend. The Zoom Q3 (which is distributed by Samson in the States) pairs a decent stereo mic and some in-depth audio controls with a regular crappy pocket video camera sensor — along with an oversized screen to make room for audio level meters. There are obviously limited situations where this is really necessary (there are plenty of much better dedicated mics for when you don’t need the VGA video to go along with it), and all your cutesy Flip mino-toting friends are going to laugh at you, but at least you’ll be able to crank up your recording to lossless and capture their cackles with eardrum shattering clarity. Check out a video of the Zoom Q3 shot with another Zoom Q3 after the break and decide for yourself if it’s worth the slightly premium $249 pricetag.
