Hands-on: new single-window mode makes GIMP less gimpy

Hands-on: new single-window mode makes GIMP less gimpy

The venerable GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is undergoing a significant transformation. The next major release, version 2.8, will introduce an improved user interface with an optional single-window mode. Although this update is still under heavy development, users can get an early look by compiling the latest source code of the development version from the GIMP’s version control repository.

The GIMP is an open source software application for editing raster graphics. It is intended to serve as a free and open alternative to high-end image editing programs for a professional audience. Although the GIMP still has some limitations relative to industry-leading commercial products like Photoshop, it is becoming an increasingly viable solution for professional artists and photographers.

Ricoh GXR review roundup

Ricoh GXR review roundup

Ricoh’s GXR certainly isn’t the most stylish camera out there, but it’s certainly one of the most unique. Boasting an ability to support interchangeable lenses and image sensors, this one offers up flexibility that few other shooters on the market can match. We’ve scrounged up a litany of reviews and hands-on impressions, and by and large, most everyone who got their hands around one enjoyed the experience. Photography Blog noted that the camera was “a remarkably mature first-generation product in an intriguing new photographic system, with excellent handling and image quality that will instantly appeal to all photographers who want to take pictures first and talk about gear second.” Unfortunately, it seems that praise quiets down a bit once you leave the bright outdoors and head inside, as the low-light performance was said to be less than awesome — though, to its credit, the built-in flash was deemed one of the better ones out there. We still aren’t seeing loads of evidence that ditching your starter DSLR setup for this is a smart move, but if you’re just now looking to upgrade from a P&S, you’d be doing yourself a solid by poking around in those links below.

Art Lebedev introduces ‘Fleximus’ camera concept

Art Lebedev introduces ‘Fleximus’ camera concept

Well, it looks like Art Lebedev has more than the rather ingenious Transparentius concept in store for us today — it’s also introduced this so-called Fleximus concept for a flexible digital camera. Not exactly anything new there, per se, but Art Lebedev seems to be pitching this one specifically to photographers, not just folks that want to peek in hard-to-see places. To that end, the Fleximus comes equipped with a proper viewfinder on one end of camera, which can also be detached and replaced with a 3-inch LCD module (check it out after the break). Of course, this is still just a concept so there’s nothing in the way of specs, but you can get an exhaustive look at the design process at the link below.

How would you change Gigapan’s Epic camera robot?

How would you change Gigapan’s Epic camera robot?

Gigapan’s Epic camera robot is an interesting beast, and calling it a niche device would be understating things rather dramatically. We had the opportunity to take an Epic 100 for a spin earlier this year, and we’re guessing that a few of you adventurous photographers have managed to pick one up since. If so, we’re curious to know how you’re enjoying things. Are you satisfied with the panoramic results? Is it snappy enough? Versatile enough? Any modifications you’d like to make if you were leading up the redesign? Toss your thoughts in comments below, cool shutterbug?

Zivity Adds Dudes. Let Me Know How It Goes (#zivitydude)

Zivity Adds Dudes. Let Me Know How It Goes (#zivitydude)

Venture backed adult site Zivity finally figured out that there’s a whole other market out there beyond guys (and a few women) who want to look at naked women. Lots of women (and a few men) apparently want to look at naked guys, too. So in a lightning bolt of marketing genius, they doubled their potential market size in a single blog post: Zividudes.

They’re taking nominations for who users want to see without their clothes on (topless for now). Once the list is set they’ll start going down the list to see who’s brave enough to say yes: “We’ll start with the top choice and work our way down until someone is brave enough to say yes! We’ll pay for the photo shoot by one of our top photographers, so the Zivity Dude will look *fantastic*.”

Who do you want to see shirtless? Twitter the name out with the hashtag #zivitydude and your vote will be counted. Early favorites include Kevin Rose, Chris Saad, Loren Feldman (although his wife is making the push), Jim Fishef and Sean Percival.

Let me know how it all turns out. And be on the lookout for Ashton Kutcher to try to steal the show. That guy will do anything for a little press. In fact, maybe Kutcher and Kevin Rose can do a dual bromance photoshoot?

RED releases high-res images of accessories, no actual accessories

When RED’s Scarlet and EPIC camera bodies finally became official late last year (after seemingly endless teasing) they were pictured with an almost farcical array of accessories. Nearly a year on and neither of the bodies nor any of those add-ons are available, but you can at least now get a higher-res look at all that wallet-tapping accoutrement. Pictured are the REDVOLT battery pack and its hot-swappable cells, the wireless REDMOTE controller, the BOMB EVF, a display screen, and even a rifle-like stock called the RED GUNNER. Some of these we’ve already seen in the flesh, others haven’t been rendered with this much detail before, and sifting through the REDUSER.net forum where they were posted uncovers some other morsels to whet the appetites of photographers who like extreme stylistic touches. The juciest is a mention that the release dates for EPIC and Scarlet will be announced in October — which doesn’t leave much time for a 2009 debut for the cameras themselves.

Leica to open a store in a store in the Photographic Centre in West Palm Beach

Leica to open a store in a store in the Photographic Centre in West Palm Beach

The gadget boutique trend continues, and Leica is latest to jump in for the retail romp, opening a store within a store in West Palm Beach, Florida. That outlet will be inside the Pro Shop for Photographers, which is itself inside the new Palm Beach Photographic Centre, a 26,000 square foot facility for teaching photography, hosting exhibits, and surely cooing over some of the company’s sexier special editions. It’s a non-profit facility, but we’re guessing Leica is hoping its little corner of it will generate a little revenue when it opens in mid-October. Fun fact: despite having all that space, the Photographic Centre doesn’t have a single dark room, leaving old-school film photographers with no place to go but the closet.

Horseman VCC Pro adds a bellows and large-format functionality to your DSLR

Horseman VCC Pro adds a bellows and large-format functionality to your DSLR

Okay, so we don’t think Horseman is marketing the $2,000 VCC Pro technical camera movement adapter to people like us who just want to make our DSLRs look fun and old-timey, but hey — in addition to giving photographers ultra-precise control over depth of field and perspective, it also makes your DSLR look fun and old-timey. Comes in Nikon and Canon versions, as you’d expect, and it’ll be available soon at pro photography shops. The rest of us will stick to wearing high-waisted pants and growing comical mustaches.
