Nexus One for AT&T’s 3G bands likely in the works

By all appearances, Google’s trying to break Android free of the surly bonds of the manufacturers and carriers that support it, opening its own online store and selling unlocked Nexus Ones to anyone willing to pony up the $529. Problem is, the Nexus One as we know it today is only available in a configuration that supports North American 3G on AWS spectrum, meaning you’ve got to go with the States’ fourth-largest carrier if you want to blaze — you’ve got no other option. That’s not very “open,” is it, Google?

That brings us to an FCC finding today. Take a look at the two labels above; the one on the right comes from the current Nexus One. The label on the left, meanwhile, is physically identical and comes from a new filing for a device with FCC ID NM899110. The old Nexus One has ID NM899100, so this new device is just a single digit off — likely a variant of the existing model. If you look into the RF reports a bit, you’ll immediately notice that the new handset supports 3G on WCDMA Bands I, II, and V, meaning that it’ll work on AT&T (and Rogers, Bell, and Telus for the Canadians in the room) along with most of Europe. Same label style, nearly identical model ID, different bands — we think we know what’s going on here. Google, your move.

Apple to introduce host of new machines, new multitouch input devices tomorrow?

We’re not sure why John Gruber and Dan Lyons are having some sort of megalomaniacal Apple super-pundit standoff, but we’ll sit here and take the spoils: Gruber’s just one-upped Lyons’s earlier vague tease of new Apple gear tomorrow with a pretty specific list of things he’s apparently heard we’ll see, including new iMacs and plastic MacBooks, revved Mac Minis (including one that runs OS X Server), a new multitouch “Magic Mouse” (ha!) and some sort of multitouch desktop trackpad accessory. That pretty much covers every rumor and vague whisper we’ve heard over the past few months, so it’s actually a fairly conservative set of predictions, outside of that trackpad — which itself may or may not be related to this multitouch input device patent from a couple weeks ago. We’ll see what happens tomorrow morning — at this point we’re half expecting a tablet, a pony, and some sort of multitouch waffle maker as well.

iPhone OS 3.0 breaking video out

Last night I received an email from a friend who was irate. He’s been using his iPod touch as a portable video solution with a dock and video out cable. The iPod and the cable got along famously until he updated to iPhone OS 3.0.1 OS 3.0 [sorry, there isn't a 3.0.1 for the iPod touch]. Now, the iPod refuses to recognize it. Same cable, same dock, same iPod.

We looked around and found that he’s not alone. There’s a thread on Apple’s Discussion Boards reporting the same thing. It’s affecting both the iPod touch and the iPhone. Apparently 3.0 is specifically designed to reject 3rd party cables, strictly on the premise that they fail the “Made by Apple” test. One poster on the discussion board notes that the original Apple Component AV cable and dock work fine. Sure, you could restore and downgrade, but that seems silly.

Of course, no company has a responsibility to support 3rd party devices, so my friend is out of luck. But we’re sympathetic. If you’re affected by this issue, all we can say is it’s probably time to pony up for a cable from Apple.

Twitter and Facebook for Xbox Live will be free for Gold members, ‘free trial’ for Silver

This shouldn’t really come as too much of a surprise, but anyone wanting to enjoy Twitter and Facebook on Xbox Live will have to pony up for Gold member subscription, the same premium prerequisite currently needed for Netflix Instant Watch and pretty much all online gaming. Silver membership will be given a “free trial,” but exactly what limitations that entails, or if they’ll be an option to “upgrade” to the full version, is anyone’s guess.

Samsung’s Ion-infused N510 netbook steeply priced across the pond

€499. $717. Or three easy payments of €171 ($246). That’s the price folks in Europe are being asked to pony up for Samsung’s admittedly svelte 11.6-inch N510 netbook. As one of the largest netbooks in its class, this machine — which can purportedly last for around 6.5 hours under ideal circumstances — also packs NVIDIA’s Ion technology, but a sluggish Atom N280 is still manning the ship. If you’ll recall, we actually heard that this here rig would surface sometime this summer, but it looks as if those orders may end up pushed to September. Anyone care to place a pre-order? Or are you more interested in those “real laptops” for just north of seven Benjamins?
