Remo humanoid hobby robot now available, wherever adorably creepy gifts are sold

We’ve always wanted a really solid humanoid robot of our very own. Remo, a hobby bot recently released in Japan — who boasts two arms and legs and seems to be about the size of a Good Guy doll — could perfectly fit that bill. He’s got pressure sensors in his feet to help out his balance, two sensors in his “eye” section (with two color CCD cameras for image processing), and Bluetooth connectivity for communication with your PC. He also comes with the expressive faceplate you see in the photo — which should definitely keep your nieces and nephews from trying to touch him, anyway. Remo is available in Japan now, but something of this quality is, as you may have guessed, not cheap: he’ll run you ¥399,999 (about $4,400).

Nokia patent app reveals dreams of pressure-sensitive multitouch interface

Nokia’s no stranger to the patent application process here in the United States, and while we’ve certainly seen some strange ones emanating from its R&D labs, this one looks like something that should be implemented on the double. Explained as a “user interface for controlling an electronic device,” the multitouch solution would essentially allow you to pinch, zoom and rotate objects as usual, but it would also employ an array of pressure sensors in order to give your motions a sense of severity. If executed properly, one could theoretically envision the use of a strong push to simulate a double tap (for example), or as a means to activate a secondary function that generally requires another button press or the use of a ‘Function’ key. Sony debuts 6.1-inch NV-U3DV navigation unit

Well, it’s not the Android-based Walkman / PND that Sony supposedly has in the works for next year, but we’re guessing the company’s new NV-U3DV navigation will still turn a few heads nonetheless, and not just because of its large 6.1-inch screen. Launched today in Japan, this PND packs a 480×272 resolution on that big new screen for bigger buttons and more map space, along with a number of fairly unique features like Position+ G, which makes use of an accelerometer, gyro-sensor, and pressure sensors to detect the direction of the vehicle even in touchy environments like a tunnel or high incline. Otherwise, you can expect all the usual media player features (including mobile TV in Japan), live traffic information, and a full range of points of interest and various guides courtesy of PetaMap. No word on a release ’round here just yet, unfortunately, but folks in Japan will be able to pick this one up in August for ¥65,000, or just under $700.
