Samsung’s 4Gb DDR3 RAM modules could put 8GB in your next netbook

Rhett and Link (and one Bill Gates, too) may assume that 64KB of memory is “plenty,” but let’s be realistic here — it’s not. Samsung’s fully in agreement, and it’s looking to make your next DIMM or SODIMM a lot more capacious with a new 40nm-class process technology. As the story goes, volume production has begun on a new 4Gb DDR3 module, which could be squeezed onto existing sticks in order to produce 16GB / 32GB DIMMs (for desktops) and 8GB SODIMMs (for laptops). There’s no clear indication of when this whole “mass production” thing will lead to “on sale right now,” but we’re guessing it’ll make the transition between “now” and “really soon.” Bonus video after the break.

Intel’s Cedarview Atom chip rumored to go 32nm in 2011
We know you aren’t publicly keeping count, but considering that you’re carefully watching process technology numbers in the depths of your mom’s basement, we felt it prudent to pass along the latest juicy nugget from the folks at Fudzilla. According to raisins in their grapevine, Intel is gunning for a 32nm Atom chip in 2011, with the codename of the CPU being Cedarview and the name of the platform being Cedar Trail. If you’ll recall, we recently heard that Pineview was expected to be formally unveiled in a slew of machines come January, but we’re already anxious for Cedarview’s DDR3 support and fresh, sun-ripened scent. Oh, and support for Blu-ray playback, too.

AMD to bring six-core ‘Thuban’ processor to the consumer realm
Look out, Intel — six cores are mightier than four, don’tcha know? Shortly after introducing a six-core processor in the server sector, AMD is reportedly angling to issue a hexa-core chip over on the consumer side. The chip maker has confirmed to Maximum PC that a six-core slab of silicon (codenamed Thuban) will be released in 2010, with the real kicker being that it’ll be fully backwards compatible with existing AM3 and AM2+ mainboards. It’ll be based on 45nm process technology and will boast an integrated DDR3 controller, 3MB of L2 cache and 6MB of L3 cache, and while the outfit wouldn’t confirm, word on the street has it that the final product will sport a Phenom II X6 moniker. So, Core i9 — what have you to say now?
