Google Maps Navigation hacked for extra-American use
Google Maps Navigation hacked for extra-American use
Guess what, prospective Milestone owners, the Droid’s one major advantage over its Euro cousin has just been coded out of existence by those proactive, un-American XDA Developers. The free Google Maps Navigation service, whose US announcement was so shocking as to decimate the stock prices of satnav purveyors Garmin and TomTom, has now been ported to work outside the land of the free as well. Not only that, but you can use the app on other Android devices, meaning your old G1 can get a breath of fresh air for absolutely free. That is if you don’t count the time it takes you to learn how to insert all the code properly and the risk of bricking your device. But we know our readers eat iron nails for breakfast and fashion elegantly optimized code before lunch, so we expect all of you to be using this by day’s end, you hear?

Crapgadget: ‘Hopefully USB 3.0 can avoid this path’ edition
Crapgadget: ‘Hopefully USB 3.0 can avoid this path’ edition

With USB 3.0 on the horizon, we can only hope that the world’s purveyors of crap have a little respect for the forthcoming standard. By and large, USB 2.0 is plenty fast to handle the awful data transmissions between USB hand grenades, alien flash drives, moody card readers, Japanese fans and your PC, and frankly, we’re not sure if the world can handle oodles upon oodles of SuperSpeed rubbish. Have a peek at the latest roundup from the worst of the worst, but please, not while you’re eating.

FTC forces Sears, Kmart out of the spyware business
FTC forces Sears, Kmart out of the spyware business
![]()
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has busted a strange set of spyware purveyors—US retailing giants Sears and Kmart.
The FTC this week approved its final consent order against the companies (which share the same owner) over an episode that can only be chalked up to incompetence of a truly epic scope. Sears Holding Management Company decided that it could really use a lot more marketing data to fuel its decision-making process, so it began offering visitors to sears.com and kmart.com a special invite—sign up for “My SHC Community,” download a piece of “research” software, and earn 10 American dollars. That’s right—10… American… dollars.
