Motorola partners with Microsoft, will use Bing search and maps on Chinese Android phones

Uh, whoa. When we heard Google’s threatened pullout of China had prompted Motorola to seek out an alternative search provider for its China-bound handsets, we can’t say we were expecting a partnership with Microsoft and Bing to result. But here we are, staring at a press release announcing the Bing search and Maps will be the default on Moto’s Chinese Android phones starting in Q1 — and the partnership is described as “global,” so there’s a chance it could spread. That’s just one more slap in Google’s face from Moto, following the release of the Yahoo-powered AT&T Backflip — and another step away from the tight relationship that produced the Droid. And does this mean Motorola might yet build a Windows Phone 7 Series device, despite a very public commitment to Android? We’d say Eric and Sanjay have some unresolved differences to work through.

New Year’s Resolution? VCs Could Spend More In 2010

The first quarter of 2010 could see a higher number of investments by venture capital firms than the fourth quarter of 2009, according to figures from new reports by the National Venture Capital Association and information and data services company ChubbyBrain.

Data from a report relased by the NVCA yesterday shows that the fourth quarter of 2009 saw a growth of $1.7 billion in venture funds over the previous quarter, similar to numbers seen from Q4 2008 to Q1 2009. Data released today by ChubbyBrain shows that following the earlier growth in venture funds, Q2 2009 saw a $1.4 billion increase in VC investments, a trend that could mean big bucks for startups in the first quarter of 2010.

As we reported last week, 2009 was a difficult year for startups and venture capital firms, with venture-backed mergers and acquisitions continuing a downward trend in 2009. Carolynn Duncan, founder and director of the startup incubator Portland Ten, says that the “pressure crunch” of 2009 caused VCs to give prospective startups more than the third degree.

“It was more like the fifth degree,” Duncan told ReadWriteWeb. “It was so intense, even for the companies showing great traction and that had bootstrapped the hell out of their project.”

Duncan believes that as the new year kicks off VCs that raised funds at the end of 2009 will be looking at a new class of startups to invest in. When asked if 2010 would be an easier year to find funding, Duncan was hesitant, but optimistic.

“I don’t think ‘easier’ is the right word, maybe just not as demanding,” she said. “People are just glad its 2010 and not 2009 anymore.”

NVIDIA Fermi pushed back to March, ATI prepping midrange refresh for early Q1?
Considering the present date, it’s no longer a mystery that Fermi won’t be seeing the glaring lights of store shelves this year, but now DigiTimes reports that the delay might be even longer than feared. Sources from within board manufacturers have been informed by NVIDIA that the launch of the 40nm GPU will be pushed back to March 2010. Though NVIDIA’s flagship DirectX 11 card has yet to get out of the starting blocks, ATI — already the proud papa of a litter of DX 11 parts — is said to be preparing a renewed onslaught on the mainstream market with two new releases slated for late January or early February. The HD 5670 (Redwood) and HD 5450 (Cedar) will slot in alongside the unannounced HD 5570 and HD 5350 to flesh out the lower and middle portions of ATI’s Evergreen refresh. So that’s one whole family of DirectX 11 parts from ATI, and one long wait from NVIDIA.

NVIDIA Ion 2 coming in early 2010, compatible with Pine Trail

Well, here we go: NVIDIA just gave us the heads-up that the next generation of Ion chips (which we’ll be calling Ion 2 until it gets a proper name) will be compatible with Intel’s new Pine Trail platform and arriving in Q1 of 2010. That’s good news, seeing as the Pine Trail-based Eee PC 1005PE we just reviewed didn’t offer much of a performance benefit over the older Diamondville chips and definitely couldn’t bust through the first few seconds of a YouTube HD clip. Though we got NVIDIA to confirm that it’ll improve some of the battery life concerns we’ve had, we couldn’t get much out of them in terms of how Ion 2 will play with the Intel GMA 3150 GPU that’s now integrated into the Atom N450 die. NVIDIA also didn’t hold back when it came to Intel’s reliance on third-party HD accelerator chips for video duties — they think customers want richer gaming and multimedia experiences on netbooks than Atom alone can offer, and they don’t seem to care that Intel keeps calling Ion “overkill.” All drama aside we’re looking forward to just getting some YouTube and Hulu HD playback on our netbooks — we’ll see what NVIDIA has to show off at CES.

Pixel Qi ramping production lines, multitouch (40-hour?) tablets at CES

We know you’re confused by the pronunciation of Pixel Qi (it’s Pixel chee, by the way). But really, does that matter? We’re just stoked to learn that its hybrid displays are hitting the assembly lines this month as the company ramps production in Q1. CEO, Mary Lou Jepsen, says that the first units will arrive in “specialized tablet devices with multi-touch,” the first of which will be on display at CES from what looks like multiple “customers.” They’ll also be available to DIYers sometime in the future. Jepsen, you’ll recall, was the original Chief Technology Officer on the OLPC project, but left to commercialize these 10-inch color 3Qi LCD displays that are readable in either direct tropical sunlight or no light at all thanks to a switchable backlight. As such, Pixel Qi is set to carve out a nice middle-ground between epaper displays and traditional LCDs that could see the advent of the 40-hour netbook / tablet. No, really.

STMicroelectronics’ 3-axis MEMS gyroscope gives a new level of control to your mobile
Man, talk about timely. We heard right around 11 months ago that MEMS gyroscopes would be hitting an array of handsets in 2009, and while it’s looking like that estimate will be just a touch off, you won’t catch up kvetching with “early 2010.” STMicroelectronics has just announced its new 3-axis MEMS gyroscope, which promises 360 degree “angular-rate detection for high-precision 3D gesture and motion recognition in mobile phones, game controllers, personal navigation systems and other portable devices.” The gyro is said to provide two separate outputs for each of the three axes at the same time: a 400dps full-scale value for slow motion, and a 1,600dps full-scale value to detect and measure speedy gestures and movements. We’re told that samples of the tech are available now with mass production scheduled for Q1 2010; and yeah PSP, it’s totally cool if you keep sweating. NGage is about to be back… with a vengeance!

Nokia makes Qt port to Maemo 5 and N900 official (video)

Hey developers, Nokia’s got a special treat for you today. It just announced the official port of the community-driven Qt for Maemo project. That means a common framework for writing native applications (and web apps and services thanks to Webkit integration) across Maemo 5 and future Maemo 6 releases, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. That’s a broad reach in terms of devices (including the hotly anticipated N900) and marketshare and a smart move by Nokia in an era where devices are differentiated not by hardware and OS but by their ability to run apps and connect to web services. A “technology preview” release is available now and scheduled for final release (based on Qt 4.6) in Q1 of 2010. Click through for a wee taste.
