Talkcast Reminder: Tonight at 10pm EDT, now with added fun!
Yes, that’s 10pm Eastern DAYLIGHT Time; hopefully by now you’ve worked out exactly what time it is where you are so you can show up on time instead of coming in at the end. (Thanks, cell phone with automatically updated clock!) Tonight’s show will also include the debut of a TUAW challenge! What kind of challenge? Tune in to find out!
While you’re there, I’m sure we can find some other Apple news to discuss this evening. I’m sure if we look really hard there is some interesting tidbit out there for all of us to chat about…
Unlike those customer service recordings that try to convince you, your call really IS important to us. Without the audience, we are just talking to ourselves, and what fun would that be? To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the “TalkShoe Web” button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 — during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8. If you’ve got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk with you then!

It’s the biggest night in show business, but just in case you’re not caught up in the Hollywood horse race (go Hurt Locker!) you’re welcome to join Mike Schramm and I for our Sunday night Talkcast, as we dive into all things Mac, iPhone and iPad.
This week, of course, the big news was the announcement of the on-sale date for Apple’s newest platform and the teaser of Steam for Mac, but there’s also a lot coming up at the Game Developer’s Conference over the next few days; we’ll preview it with you. As always, your calls and questions help us make the show the best it can be.

Senate takes companies to task for ignoring Internet freedom
Senate takes companies to task for ignoring Internet freedom
![]()
Earlier this year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave a speech in which she made it clear that Internet freedom would be a major theme of the US government’s attempts to get information to the citizens of repressive governments. Things haven’t change much in the interim, with the conviction of Google executives in Italy serving as a reminder that it’s not simply repressive regimes that put companies in legal hot water. With those events as a backdrop, the US Senate’s Judiciary Committee heard testimony today on Internet freedom that emphasized how challenging it will be to find a way to open up the flow of information in repressive regimes.
The Google-Italy case did figure briefly, as an example of how even a country with values that have a significant overlap with those of the US can have significant legal differences when it comes to online activities (Italy lacks the US’ safe harbor provisions for hosts of user-generated online content). Still, the hearings focused primarily on those nations, such as China and Iran, that exercise significant control over online content.

It’s talkcast time again, and tonight we’ll be joined by a special guest: Your Mac Life’s own Shawn King (see the Macworld interview with him posted earlier this evening). We’ll get Shawn’s perspective on Macworld expo, the upcoming iPad launch, and the rest of the Mac and iPhone market — plus, as always, we’ll take your calls and questions. Join in, won’t you?

Overhyped, Overpriced & Disappointing: iPad? No, iPod in 2001
Overhyped, Overpriced & Disappointing: iPad? No, iPod in 2001
“I still can’t believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! … I want something new! I want them to think differently! Why oh why would they do this?! It’s so wrong! It’s so stupid!”
Sound familiar? That wasn’t a reaction to yesterday’s Apple iPad launch, that was a MacRumors commenter in 2001 reacting to the launch of the iPod. The iPod, the device that symbolized personal electronics more than any other product in the last decade, was widely criticized when it was unveiled. It was “just another MP3 player.”
One notable detail in comparing the history of the iPod with the new iPad: iPod sales were no big deal until three years after the product was launched. There was no iTunes for Windows until two years after the iPod came out – the iPad already has a thriving app store. (See this conversation on Hacker News for more snarky historical perspective.)
Thus while these old comments about the iPod are humorous in retrospect, the history of the iPod is a reminder of just how much has to go right for even a revolutionary Apple product to really explode. There may be a lot of us who wait for the iPad 2.0.
“I’d call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time… and it’s not really functional. Uuhh Steve, can I have a PDA now?” That’s what they said then. Will we look back in 10 years at today’s complaints about the iPad missing a camera and chuckle in the same way? Maybe not about the camera, but the missing Flash support? Now that might seem silly in retrospect.
Reminder: nominate your favorite gadgets in the 2009 Engadget Awards!
Reminder: nominate your favorite gadgets in the 2009 Engadget Awards!
We know it’s a really busy week, but we wanted to take a moment and remind all of you that there’s still time left to nominate your favorite gadgets of last year for the 2009 Engadget Awards!
For your voting (and nominating) pleasure, we present the sixth annual Engadget Awards! The premise is simple: 2009 may have slipped through our fingers, but all the memories of gadgets-past are still with us (some in a more favorable light than others). Here’s your chance to sound off on what you loved in 2009, and tell us what you’re psyched about for 2010.
This year we’ve got 24 categories up for grabs, with 48 total awards to be decided. All finalists for Engadget Awards are reader-nominated, and the editors of Engadget will then select the best of those nominations (usually somewhere between 4-6 devices or technologies) as finalists.
There are two awards per category, Reader’s Choice (voted on by you!), and Editors’ Choice (selected by us). The vote will take place in a few weeks once the nominees are picked, and winners will be announced shortly thereafter.
You can find all the info and nominees on a landing page we’ve built this year which should make it easier to get all your selections in (and vote once we’ve picked the finalists). Just click right here.
You’ve got until 11:59PM ET on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 to get your entries in. Now, go nominate, or use the handy list after the break!

Happy 26th Birthday, Mac!
Happy 26th Birthday, Mac!
Filed under: Odds and ends, Apple History
Despite all odds, the Mac has survived to its 26th birthday.
On January 24th, 1984, Steve Jobs pulled a 128K Mac out of its case in front of a crowd of reporters, turned it on, and let the computer introduce itself to the world. The rest, as they say, is history.
We’ve seen our favorite computer go from an awkward infancy, to almost dying in its teens, and now being a profitable prodigy in adulthood.
It has spawned a popular family of siblings, from the iPod series of media players to the iPhone. Somehow, it’s fitting that we may see the birth of the newest member of the family later this week.
Watching the “Story of Macintosh” video in the past few weeks has introduced the young minds behind the first Mac to most of the current generation. For those of us who are a bit older, the video served as a reminder of the brash individuals who created a computer that still speaks to those who “Think Different.”
Here’s hoping that the Mac and all of its family may live a long and fruitful life.
