Windows Mobile 6.5.1 (or whatever it’s called) looking ready for primetime
Windows Mobile 6.5.1 (or whatever it’s called) looking ready for primetime
Even before 6.5 got official, the Windows Mobile community has been toying around with post-RTM leaked builds that really amp up the finger-friendliness — thing is, no one seems to know what it is, what it’s called, when it’s coming, who will get it, or how it meshes with the upcoming release of WinMo 7 next year. For now, it’s being informally called 6.5.1 — sounds like a fair name to us — and new mockups floating around suggest that Microsoft really wants to bridge the gap and make major user experience modifications to 6.5; the pre-7 platform hasn’t yet reached the end of the road, apparently. Big buttons at the bottom of the screen look like they should be usable by even the fattest of fingers on a resistive display (and indeed, we’ve seen various forms of these in leaked builds) and interface elements throughout the OS have been spruced up to finally put the stylus to bed. We’ll take it, but we would’ve been happy to take it in lieu of 6.5, too.

Windows 7 is here
Windows 7 is now for sale around the world. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is officially kicking off the Windows 7 launch at an event in New York City. Microsoft’s partners will be unveiling new hardware and OEMs are now no longer recommending Vista to consumers and are switching their default choice to Windows 7. Today is easily the most important day for Microsoft this year (the operating system’s RTM date of July 22, 2009 comes in at a close second place). Here’s everything you need to know about what’s happening today.

Windows 7 RTM released to TechNet and MSDN
Here we go — as planned, Microsoft’s just released the Windows 7 RTM build to TechNet and MSDN subscribers. Selected beta testers will also get access, but you’ll have to promise to be Microsoft’s best friend. As for the rest of us, well, October 22 isn’t so far away, and the RC build is still available. That’s something, right?

Windows 7 activation already cracked with Lenovo’s OEM license key
Windows 7 activation already cracked with Lenovo’s OEM license key
Sort of funny that Microsoft made a big show of handing over the Windows 7 RTM code to Lenovo and other manufacturers last week — the first activation crack for the OS has just appeared, and it’s based on Lenovo’s OEM license key. Oops. The crack apparently works with 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 Ultimate, and it apparently passes Genuine Advantage, so things are looking good for all you wannabe pirates out there. You did buy an upgrade disc, though, right?

Microsoft invites some of its bestest OEM buddies over for a Windows 7 RTM code handoff party
Microsoft invites some of its bestest OEM buddies over for a Windows 7 RTM code handoff party
Redmond was the place to be last night, as Microsoft gave over that long-anticipated Windows 7 RTM code to its favorite OEM partners, including HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, ASUS (pictured), Acer, Dell, Sony and Fujitsu-Siemens. Even if you’re not big into operating system nuts and bolts, it’s hard not to get just a little choked up as one nerd hands a nondescript white box to another nerd. You know there’s magic in the air.
