USB 3.0-infused DisplayLink products coming in 2010
DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort may be enjoying the spoils right now, but the world’s most popular port may just give ‘em a run for their collective dollars by the end of next year. DisplayLink, which enables monitors to receive signals via USB instead of through one of the more conventional cables, has been mildly successful with USB 2.0 at the helm, but a whole new world is about to open up with the introduction of USB 3.0. As you’ve no doubt seen by now, the third iteration offers up over ten times the bandwidth of v2.0, which would obviously allow for great resolution support when channeling video. In reality, USB 3.0 is the first USB protocol that could support a legitimate high-def video stream, and it’s expected that a prototype device will be shown at CES next month transmitting content at up to 4.8 gigabits per second. In theory, at least, USB 3.0-enabled DisplayLink would allow vast 30-inch panels to be connected to netbooks via USB without having to rely on a sub-native resolution, but then again, said netbooks will probably need a GPU with a bit more oomph than the current Ion can provide. Not like that’ll be an issue for long, though.

Apple to introduce host of new machines, new multitouch input devices tomorrow?

We’re not sure why John Gruber and Dan Lyons are having some sort of megalomaniacal Apple super-pundit standoff, but we’ll sit here and take the spoils: Gruber’s just one-upped Lyons’s earlier vague tease of new Apple gear tomorrow with a pretty specific list of things he’s apparently heard we’ll see, including new iMacs and plastic MacBooks, revved Mac Minis (including one that runs OS X Server), a new multitouch “Magic Mouse” (ha!) and some sort of multitouch desktop trackpad accessory. That pretty much covers every rumor and vague whisper we’ve heard over the past few months, so it’s actually a fairly conservative set of predictions, outside of that trackpad — which itself may or may not be related to this multitouch input device patent from a couple weeks ago. We’ll see what happens tomorrow morning — at this point we’re half expecting a tablet, a pony, and some sort of multitouch waffle maker as well.

T-Mobile G1 won’t see any Android updates beyond 1.5

Pioneering T-Mobile G1 owners have been enjoying the spoils of Android 1.5 (or Cupcake, as it’s known ’round these parts) for months now, but it looks as if that very treat will be the last taste of confectionery goodness that the smartphone gets. According to Android software engineer Dave Sparks, a time is soon coming when devs “wont be able to fit the latest [Android] release on the G1’s internal flash,” and yet another engineer has chimed in via Twitter to say that he “can’t promise” that any update after 1.5 will fit. For whatever reason, HTC gifted the G1 with an incredibly meager amount of internal flash, and considering that no Android phone will support app storage / loading from a microSD card, there’s no way to free up room for Donut, Eclair or Flan. You’ve been a real champ, G1, but without 2.0+, we just can’t give you the love and devotion you truly need. Go on, call us fickle — we deserve it.

BIOS password snag subdues Intel’s 34nm X25-M G2 launch party

Man, Intel can’t win for losin’. After it was forced to issue a firmware update to remedy an off-the-wall slowdown issue that affected a few of its original X25-M SSDs, the outfit is already having to push out a patch to solve a minor quirk with its newfangled 34nm X25-M G2 drives. According to Puget System’s William George, his company — along with NewEgg and a number of other respected vendors — was forced to yank the new drive from its website shortly after it became available. Turns out, there is a defect in the initial shipment that could cause data corruption if “a password is set on the drive in the system BIOS, and then changed or disabled later.”

We’re told that a firmware fix should be out within a fortnight, and while most companies are allowing folks to hold off and wait for factory-patched drives, those who don’t foresee themselves placing such a password on their SSD can go ahead and enjoy the spoils of 34nm flash goodness while waiting for Intel’s engineers to do their thang. Oh, and if you’re thinking about buying in now, you should probably know that Intel has halted shipments until the fix is complete. Ready to deal with a shortage, are you?
