You seriously don’t want to miss it!
Of course, if you’re in NY we’d love to have you attend the show in person at the Times Center. It’s absolutely free! We’ll start handing out tickets at 2:30PM, open the doors for seating at 4:30PM, and the show itself starts at 5PM. There will also be giveaways from Sony after the show, but you obviously have to be here to participate! All the info about attending can be found here.

For many people, Twitter offers a larger, more diverse stream of constantly flowing data than they’ve ever had to deal with before in their life. Depending on how many people you follow and how much they tweet, the information can become unmanageable. To that end, we have user lists, third-party clients, Twitter tools and search.
And today, it looks like Twitter has begun working on making this last option – search – more useful for its users by offering the ability to percolate popular search results to the top of the page.
Jennifer Van Grove at Mashable noticed an update in the Twitter API Google Group this morning that alerts us of a soon-to-come search feature – popular tweets.
From the post on Google Groups:
Until the popular tweet feature all search results have been sorted
chronologically, most recent results at the top. If a search query has any
popular results, those will be returned at the top, even if they are older
than the other results.
Basically, the API will now offer a variable named “result_type” that can will return either “popular” or “recent”. Programs will be able to use the variable to either return search results with popular tweets at the top as default, show only popular results or show only recent results.
Also added to the Twitter API this week are two other variables for the retweet API.
The first will return up to the first 100 user representations of those who
have retweeted the tweet specified in the url by :status_id.The second will return just the ids of those retweeters for the cases where
that’s all you care about.
Perhaps these have some sort of implication in how tweets will be deemed popular, but even if not, it could be useful in watching the trickle-down spread of a tweet.

Twitter’s commercial accounts may finally land at Chirp conference next month
Commercial accounts for businesses on Twitter may finally make their debut next month at the company’s inaugural developer conference Chirp.
Anamitra Banerji is leading a session on commercial accounts in the afternoon at the conference. Last summer, co-founder Biz Stone told us that the company was planning to launch a commercial layer over its ecosystem by year-end. They’re several months behind, but it looks like it may finally be happening.
What could show up in them? Since it’s the hub in its vast network, the company may have the best sense of how many times a tweet was delivered, regardless of which partner it was sent to like Seesmic or Brizzly. The analytics the company will offer probably won’t impede too much partners like CoTweet that have developed enterprise-focused Twitter clients. CoTweet chief executive Jesse Engle, who has seen much of Twitter’s plans, said the company doesn’t have any incentive to build workflow management tools, for example. Plus many business focused Twitter clients have broadened out their reach to include Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace status updates.
Dick Costolo is also giving a speech on monetization strategy and we’ve seen hints dropped that the company’s much anticipated advertising network may also be unveiled there. There hasn’t been official confirmation though. You can see the full schedule here.

The Engadget Show returns this Saturday, March 20th with Nicholas Negroponte and PlayStation Move!

It’s that time again — the Engadget Show returns this Saturday, March 20th at 5pm! We’ll be joined by Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the MIT Media Lab and OLPC project for what’s sure to be a rousing conversation. What’s more, we’ll have Joystiq’s Chris Grant on hand and Sony’s Senior Researcher Richard Marx will be showing off the PlayStation Move… and we’ll be letting some lucky audience members demo it live on the show! You’ll be meeting our new investigative correspondent Rick Karr and we’ll have more of the classic Engadget Show shenanigans that you love so much. You can also look forward to some chiptune goodness from minusbaby, as well as visuals from notendo. We’ll be streaming the whole thing direct to you via the internet, but we’ll be doing some major giveaways at the live show only, so make the trek and join us at The Times Center in person if you can. If for some reason you live in not-New York, hit up the stream and tweet comments directly to the show!
The Engadget Show is sponsored by Sprint, and will take place at the Times Center, part of The New York Times Building in the heart of New York City at 41st St. between 7th and 8th Avenues (see map after the break). Tickets are — as always — free to anyone who would like to attend, but seating is limited, and tickets will be first come, first served… so get there early! Here’s all the info you need:

- The event is all ages
- Ticketing will begin at the Times Center at 2:30PM on Saturday, doors will open for seating at 4:30PM, and the show begins at 5PM

Facebook May Begin Allowing Developers To Store User Data For More Than 24 Hours
Facebook’s f8 conference is shaping up to have quite a few improvements in store for developers, and we think we’ve come across another one: a change to Facebook’s data retention policy. Yesterday, Facebook employee Monica Keller (who left MySpace to join the company last month), took part in a conversation on Twitter that seemed to indicate that developers may no longer have to delete user data. The possible change came to light after Gnip CEO Eric Marcoullier gently chided Keller about developers being unable to store any user data, to which she responded, “come to f8!”.
Since that tweet, we’ve heard further whispers about a change to Facebook’s 24 hour policy retention, and that Facebook is already briefing developers on the upcoming changes.

So why does this matter? Facebook has historically been quite restrictive with regard to what developers are allowed to do with user data; in particular, it only allows developers using Facebook Connect to store user data for 24 hours before they have to delete it, or ping Facebook’s servers for a refresh. There are some exceptions to that rule (you can get a sense for them here), but the majority of the ‘meaty’ content can’t be stored by developers. As a result, applications have to constantly connect with Facebook’s servers, which multiple developers we’ve spoken with say is very inefficient.
If Facebook does extend that 24 hour window, developers would be able to do things that generally require locally stored data, like batch processing (this isn’t feasible now because the application would have to make an API call for each user). Likewise, if these applications had the data stored locally they would be able to boost load speeds because they wouldn’t have to wait for a call to Facebook’s servers after their applications loaded.
Of course, such a change would also have privacy implications (we’ll wait until we have all the details before we analyze those). That said, we’ve also heard that many developers simply ignore some of Facebook’s data retention policies, in part because Facebook has a very hard time enforcing them. So it’s unclear just how big an impact this would have on the applications being developed.

The Web is huge. And growing. Faster everyday. It’s almost like an ocean where there’s no evaporation (the data on the Web stays there virtually forever), but yet, it’s always raining in it. The rain is the new content that’s added into the ocean.
Every tweet is a drop, every blog post is a drop, every check-in is a drop that falls into the ocean. This ocean is almost constantly under a tropical storm in some places, like Twitter or Facebook.

When you’re a search engine, you obviously have an exhaustivity requirement. You can’t really skip on indexing the Indian Ocean. Google sends its bo(a)ts all over the ocean where it’s raining to update its index. However, the ocean is growing so fast that it will eventually become harder and harder to stay exhaustive.
Unfortunately, not only the ocean is growing, but it’s also raining more, which means that if a bo(a)t is away from a zone for too long, when it will be back it will have changed tremendously. That’s what happens when you see results in a search engine that are 1- or 2-years old, or even older. They’re not wrong, they’re just often inaccurate, but rank well.
It’s a real technical problem for search engines to know where to send their bo(a)ts, and at the right time! And when Google says they’re going to feed their search index with PubSubHubbub data, that’s what they’re trying to do: save a little bit on the boats.
I strongly disagree with John Battelle when he says this is not a huge deal. My take is that he sees this only as a great technical and infrastructure opportunity for Google, not so much as an immediate benefit for the end user. I strongly disagree – and so do you. You disagreed when you typed “earthquake” into Twitter Search, or even “hudson crash”, or “Mickael Jackson”. At that point, you knew that Google wasn’t able to provide you with the information you were looking for, and this is a massive loss for Google.
Google will have a hard time getting this brain share back. The first thing it needs to do is to actually have results that date back from the minute when people look for these things.
You may argue that if you search 10 times a day on Google, you go maybe once a week to Twitter search. I’m the same, no worries. Yet, I know that Twitter is much better than Google at contextualization. When I do a search on Google, I expect to find the absolute truth. If I look for earthquake, I’m looking at facts about earthquakes: pictures or maybe historical data. If I look for earthquake on Twitter, I’m looking for context; I want what is being said about earthquakes now (and here!).
As a matter of facts, Google always had a lot of issues about context because they know so little about the people who search there (or maybe they know a lot, but don’t want to scare us). Adding PubSubHubbub is a way for them to be able to take the “time dimension” back. They many never have the conversations that Twitter has, but they will have a much bigger ocean of data than Twitter’s sea of Tweets

If you’ve ever done SXSW before, then you know about the music here in Austin. If you haven’t, let us tell you now – there’s a lot. But how do you find it all? And how do you find out which show is best? And how do you share blogs, photos, videos and tweet about it all at once?
SuperGlued, which has integrated with both Foursquare and Twitter, will be your your one-stop shop for the more than 1,200 bands that are set to invade Austin over the next week and a half.
SuperGlued is a can’t-miss app for navigating SXSW without having the schizophrenically switch between iPhone apps just to keep up. With the release of a new version of its iPhone app, users can find shows, buy tickets, tweet and read what others are tweeting, post photos and check-in to Foursquare. And if you find yourself at a lame show, the new “Where My Friends At” feature will let you know what shows your friends are seeing so you can ask them if it’s any better.
A new partnership with BandsInTown not only helps the service find all the shows going on, but lets you buy tickets from your iPhone. And for special events, like SXSW, Superglued brings all the shows together into a separate event listing.
Aside from the iPhone app, the website lets you continue to interact around the shows you’ve seen long after they’ve ended. Rush Doshi, who co-founded SuperGlued with Gawker CTO Tom Plunkett, told us on the phone the other day that SuperGlued is the water cooler for everyone to gather around and talk about that crazy show they saw last week.
“The idea came about from going to a lot of shows and wondering about who else was there – it just seemed that there was no one place to go to see what everyone else thought,” said Doshi. “We built SuperGlued to be that place.”
SuperGlued connects with Flickr, YouTube, Blogger, Wordpress and Tumblr, so when the shows all over, you can both add and check out block posts, videos, set lists and more from the website.
Doshi told us that they have made extra efforts to make sure that all of the SXSW shows are list, but if a show isn’t there, users can add shows via the website. With the number of shows springing up in parking lots and backyards, this is a must-have feature. In the near future, the company is looking to include show-specific merchandise in its iPhone app, letting you browse and even order show merchandise from your phone and having it shipped to your house.
Beyond SXSW, SuperGlued is available around the world with nearly 200,000 show listings, many of which it pulls from BandInTown and Last.fm, in 140 countries. So, wherever you are, get off your duff, download the iPhone app and go see some live music.

We’ve written about Twitter client Sobees, which is working to create the best social media client on the market, competing with both TweetDeck and Seesmic. Today Sobees is releasing a new version of its Windows native desktop app built in .NET, complete with realtime search, a redesign and more.
The new client includes support for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, FriendFeed and LinkedIn (which was added late last year). The most significant addition is the availability of realtime search on the client, with the ability to search Twitter, Friendfeed, OneRiot and FacteryLabs from within the application. Sobees integrated elements of its newly launched realtime web dashboard to power search in the client.
Sobees has also added drag and drop technology for columns in order to change the place of a column within the client. Other technical updated include the ability to preview Tweets and maps, translate messages, and see pictures posted on TwitPic from within the Tweet. And Sobees will break out threaded conversations you have with friends.
Sobees is competing in a crowded space where each client continues to innovate and offer users more options for managing their social media accounts and the reealtime web. For example, Seesmic has incorporated Ping.fm, to allows users to update more than 50 different social networks at the same time. And TweetDeck now incorporates YouTube and Flickr within its client. For now, Sobees doesn’t have any mobile clients but we are told that iPhone and Android apps are coming soon.
