Sony’s 360-degree 3D prototype displays blown minds (video)

Sony’s 360-degree 3D prototype displays blown minds (video)

Engadget Japanese is live at Tokyo’s Digital Content EXP0 2009 where we’ve gone eyes-on with Sony’s 360-degree 3D display prototype. Check the video (and sample image) after the break for a quick walk-around to see how Sony hopes the device can be used both commercially and in the home — we’re not talking HD here folks but it’s an interesting concept nonetheless.

Sony’s VAIO L 1080p all-in-one PC is perfect for rockin’ moms (video)

Sony's VAIO L HD touchscreen all-in-one is perfect for rockin' moms

Sony has a long history of VAIO all-in-one machines, usually taking the party line by offering swank aesthetics combined with slightly cringe-inducing price tags. When we went hands on with its latest, the VAIO L, we found it to look just as good as those earlier ones, but its $1,300 price tag to be rather fair. Built into a 24-inch, 1920 x 1080 (1080p) touchscreen it’s meant to serve as both an HDTV and a PC, featuring an HDMI inport where you can plug in your PS3. Yes, that’s what mom calls it before she starts rocking out with the kiddos in the video after the break. It has a 500GB drive for your apps and for DVR recordings through Windows 7 Premium, packs a Blu-ray writer, a Core 2 Duo processor, and “loads of RAM.” Sure, there are cheaper ways to get an all-in-one, but only one comes standard with an inport.

Sony and Toshiba demo TransferJet short-range sharing at CEATEC (video)

Sony and Toshiba demo TransferJet short-range sharing at CEATEC (video)

TransferJet is still solidly in the “fledgling” stage, but it looks as if a few big time industry players have faith that consumers have a desire — nay, a need — for short-range, high-speed sharing. Here at CEATEC in Japan, both Sony and Toshiba were on hand with independent TransferJet demonstrations, and while the actual protocol has been in place for awhile now, it’s the supporting cast (read: hardware) that has remained elusive. Toshiba was utilizing a snazzy TG01 and Qosmio laptop in order to showcase just how quickly the two could share information over the air, while Sony had us believing that pretty much everything it’ll make for the rest of eternity could support device-to-device sharing. Head on past the break for a peek at the demos, but try not to get your hopes up for seeing this stuff in shipping products anytime in the immediate future, okay?

Video: Sony’s CEATEC concept party includes Walkman bracelet and 0.2mm thin OLED

Video: Sony’s CEATEC concept party includes Walkman bracelet and 0.2mm thin OLED

We’ve yet to see a trade show where Sony left its Rhode Island-sized booth at home, and CEATEC is no exception. Aside from pushing its 1080p 3D installations with an epic amount of force, the company also had a smattering of swank new concepts on display that caught our eyes. A 0.2 millimeter-thin flexible OLED display was alive and displaying content, while an ultrathin Reader mock-up looked more like a MID and less like a Kindle. Without question, the two items that took our breath away were the all-panel laptop (which tossed the traditional keyboard in favor of a single, swooping display) and the Walkman bracelet, which did little more than talk dirty to us and get our imaginations working overtime. Unfortunately, all the good stuff was behind bulletproof glass with practically zero information to digest, but you can indulge your senses anyway in the gallery below and video after the break.

Video: Sony Ericsson Satio unboxed, demonstrated with the utmost care

October 7th is like, what, just under a fortnight away? But we know good and well that’s not making it any easier to wait for Sony Ericsson’s 12.1 megapixel Satio to launch across the pond. If you’re eager to live vicariously through a well-connected individual over on YouTube, you can hop on past the break right now to see the phone unboxed (in all three colors, no less) and detailed to a level that only a true SE fanboy could treasure. And that includes you, over there in the closet…

[Thanks, Simon]

Sony VAIO X stars in esoteric promo video

Sony VAIO X stars in esoteric promo video

We’d have much rather gotten a VAIO X video promising us an upgrade to CULV internals over the Atom in the demo units, but instead we’re getting tinkling pianos and sword-based visual metaphors. At least there’s a hint of an “autumn” release date, we suppose. Full video after the break.

[Thanks, Bob]

Video: Sony confirms it’s ‘bringing home 3D’ starting in 2010

Video: Sony confirms it’s ‘bringing home 3D’ starting in 2010

As it turns out, yesterday’s report was spot-on. Sony today announced that it is bringing the experience of looking absolutely ridiculous in 3D glasses home to the living room. The initiative is “starting in 2010″ and will expand through BRAVIA LCD HDTVs, VAIO machines, PlayStation 3, and Blu-ray discs… and not in the press release, but we clearly see a CyberShot digital camera in the promotional video (look out, Fujifilm). It’s hard to say from the wording if all the listed product lines will go 3D next year, but from what we gather there’ll at least be BRAVIA sets in time for that Christmas. Curious see the zaniest video this side of the second dimension? Well, we don’t have that, but you can giggle your way through Sony’s promo after the break.
