Logitech gives away free wireless mouse and keyboard (it’s an app)
Logitech gives away free wireless mouse and keyboard (it’s an app)
Filed under: iPhone, App Store, iPod touch
Peripheral manufacturer Logitech has released a free app that lets you turn your iPhone or iPod touch (or probably even your iPad, if you’re Stephen Colbert) into a wireless mouse and keyboard. The free TouchMouse app [iTunes Link] is perfect for those situations where you’ve connected your Mac to a TV and want a way to control it from the comfy confines of your favorite couch.
There are actually two components to TouchMouse; the iPhone app and the Logitech TouchMouse Server software. The latter comes in Mac OS X and Windows (XP, Vista, and 7) versions, and must be installed on the Mac or PC in order to “host” the virtual mouse and keyboard created by TouchMouse.
The “mouse” has three buttons for your “clicking” pleasure, and uses the majority of your iPhone screen as a touchpad. With the touch of a button, you can bring up a keyboard to type on your Mac or PC.
There are other apps that can do the same thing if you’re not a fan of Logitech. Air Mouse Pro [US$1.99, iTunes Link] is probably the most powerful and popular Wi-Fi mouse in the App Store, while Rowmote Pro [US$4.99, iTunes Link] has a large and vocal fan following. If you’re looking for free (and who isn’t?), Logitech’s TouchMouse app can give you a taste of remote control at absolutely no cost.

Lenovo’s wireless Multimedia Remote with Keyboard sneaks out for retail
Lenovo’s wireless Multimedia Remote with Keyboard sneaks out for retail
In an age of advertising hyperbole so gratuitous that every spec tweak or color change is accompanied by a press release, it’s honestly refreshing to watch Lenovo tip-toe interesting new products into retail with nary a peep. Like this palm-sized Multimedia Remote with Keyboard spotted by an Engadget reader inside a Singapore mobile phone shop. Seems this wireless pup (model 57Y6336) has been on sale for about a week across the globe with a $60 MSRP or about $30 after a quick Google for discount coupons. That meager tithe takes home a 2.4GHz keyboard with trackball and USB “nano dongle” for your Windows home theater PC good for about 10-meters of wireless sofa surfing. See it in the wild after the break.
[Thanks, Bryan C.]

Using a Wireless Keyboard with an iPhone using BTstack Keyboard
Using a Wireless Keyboard with an iPhone using BTstack Keyboard
Filed under: Peripherals, Features, Bluetooth, iPhone, iPod touch, Jailbreak/pwnage

A few days ago, the BTStack keyboard package was released to Cydia. This package, which we posted about recently, allows owners of jailbroken iPhones to use a Bluetooth keyboard with their iPhone 3G or 3GS, or 2nd generation or later iPod touch. The package is available for US$5.00 from Cydia.
Since the iPhone was first introduced, there have been efforts to bring support for external accessories. The iPhone 3.0 external accessory framework allowing accessories that connect to the universal dock connector or use Bluetooth has been closed, and only a few companies have developed accessories using the framework. The BTStack project by Matthias Ringwald offers a more complete and open Bluetooth stack for jailbroken iPhones. The stack has even been used with an iPhone and a Wii Remote over Bluetooth. To use a Bluetooth keyboard for quick and easy data entry into your iPhone, you’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone, which can be done with an application like blackra1n.
Read on to find how I set up my iPhone to use the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and how it works with the iPhone.

The other new products that Apple released today
The other new products that Apple released today
Filed under: Peripherals, Portables, iMac
Surprisingly, the Mac mini, Magic Mouse, iMac, MacBook, AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule updates are not the only things Apple updated today. Several other products were updated today, which include:
- Apple Wireless Keyboard: This keyboard, the subject of several update rumors, did get revised today. It now only requires 2 AA batteries, down from 3 in the previous model.
- Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter: This adapter now has a aluminum connector, much like the one found on the 45 watt adapter for the MacBook Air; it should be more durable for use.
- VESA Mount Adapter Kit: This model for the 24 inch Apple LCD Cinema Display and the previous 24 inch iMac now supports the new 27 inch iMac.
Also, the wired mouse-formerly-known-as-Mighty Mouse — which is still available — was renamed to “Apple Mouse.” This is consistent with the trademark for Mighty Mouse (the computer mouse) being finally picked up by Man & Machine, instead of CBS and Apple.
Are you going to enjoy the improvements in these products? Let us know in the comments below!

IOGEAR unveils new HDMI Control Center for well-heeled A/V fiends
IOGEAR unveils new HDMI Control Center for well-heeled A/V fiends
Sure, for some folks a simple 4-port HDMI extender is all that’s needed, but you’re not playing around, are you? If “overkill” is the only way that you roll, check out IOGEAR’s latest: the HDMI Control Center includes a wireless keyboard with built-in laser trackball, supports 1080p (1920 x 1200) and HDMI 1.3, is HDCP compliant, rocks Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio Support, and ships for the princely sum of $499.95. Definitely not for the weak-willed. PR after the break.

Microsoft’s Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000: ready for Windows 7, just like your haggard Vista PC
Microsoft’s Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000: ready for Windows 7, just like your haggard Vista PC
Microsoft has, against all odds, managed to stuff comfort and wireless into its new Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000 keyboard and mouse set. Beyond the usual improvements to design (and some nice new soft touch materials), the setup includes some Windows 7 optimizations, particularly the Taskbar Favorites keys for instant access to corresponding taskbar items from a row of hotkeys (think your number row in World of Warcraft, Mr. Gnome Rogue), along with a Windows Flip button on the mouse and keyboard, and Device Stage support for checking out and setting up your fancy Microsoft hardware in glorious detail. The mouse is a BlueTrack-powered affair, and both devices hook up to the computer wirelessly through an included 2.4GHz transceiver. The pair will be out later this month for $80.

Engadget’s recession antidote: win a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000
Engadget’s recession antidote: win a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000

This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn’t want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back — so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. We’ll be handing out a new gadget every day to lucky readers until we run out of stuff or companies stop sending things. Today we’ve got nine (9) Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000 keyboard and mouse up for grabs. Besides the sleek design and BlueTrack Technology, it boasts some handy Windows 7 features like Taskbar Favorites and Windows Flip to make use even easier. Read the rules below (no skimming — we’re omniscient and can tell when you’ve skimmed) and get commenting! Hooray for free stuff!
Big thanks to Microsoft for providing the gear!
The rules:
- Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for “fixing” the world economy, that’d be sweet too.
- You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
- If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
- Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
- Winner will be chosen randomly. Nine (9) winners will each receive one (1) Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000 keyboard and one (1) mouse. Approximate retail value is $69.95.
- If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
- Entries can be submitted until Thursday, July 23rd, at 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
- Full rules can be found here.
