Sir Howard Stringer and friends show off Sony Ericsson’s new handsets

A gaggle of higher-ups from Sony Ericsson stuck around after the conclusion of today’s event to show off the X10 mini, X10 mini pro, and Vivaz pro in person, and we seriously can’t stress this enough: the mini twins are small. Well, either that, or the men holding them were gigantic — but we’re pretty sure it’s the former since we got around to spending some quality time with the mini pro and continued to be blown away by its diminutive stature. Rikko Sakaguchi (pictured left) had two colors of the mini plus a Vivaz pro, while Lennard Hoornik was rockin’ the original X10 plus a mini pro. We’ll be honest: the company’s platform strategy is as meandering and muddled as ever, but with designs like this in the pipeline, they’ll definitely be demanding their fair share of attention over the next few months. Microsoft’s own E3: Halo Reach beta dated, Fable III details

It has been four years since Microsoft last put on an event like X10, but the publisher seems to be making up for lost time with all the announcements it made yesterday: official release dates, collectors editions, a brand-new console bundle, and previews of some of the biggest games coming out this year were all on the docket.

Normally, you don’t see this many headlines outside of shows like GDC or E3. That Microsoft was comfortable making as many announcements as it did at a private event in San Francisco makes us wonder what they’ll have in store for us later on this year. In the meantime, hit the jump for some of the bigger news items.

Sony Ericsson answers your nagging X10 questions, ‘newer version’ of Android will come
While we all continue to twiddle our thumbs in anticipation of the X10’s general availability, Dutch site Tweakers took some time out with Sony Ericsson’s Jacob Sten to get a few pressing questions from the community answered. It’s quite a test — Sten fielded over 80 questions in all — and there were a few big takeaways that should be of interest to anyone who’s got even glancing interest in putting this thing in their pocket in the next few months. First off, it’s still scheduled to launch with Android 1.6 Donut, but his words along with a post over on SE’s official Product Blog give us hope that we’ll be seeing 2.0, 2.1, or something even fresher down the road (to quote the post’s headline, the phone “will be upgradeable”). 1.6 doesn’t support multitouch in the framework, and indeed, Sten confirms that the X10 will be a unitouch device, though it’s not clear whether that could change with a newer firmware or if there’s a hardware issue involved. As for pricing, we can expect this to launch for €599 (about $817) — in Holland, anyhow, where it’s on track to hit shelves before the end of the quarter. The subsidized pricing should hopefully be a tad less heart-stopping.

Xbox v1 games, systems no longer Live; Microsoft’s pulling the plug April 15

It’s been no secret that original Xbox games have been the vestigial limb holding back much wanted features including raising the limit on our friends list to over 100 or mobile tie-ins, and on April 15 all that will come to an end. Even those Xbox Originals downloaded to the 360 or played via backwards compatibility will be cut off, so we’d suggest getting those last few rounds of Halo 2 in now or at least look into an alternative solution like XBConnect. Affected users should keep an eye on their inbox, Xbox Live GM Marc Whitten has promised “details and opportunities” to come for you as partners in this process — we’re figuring a coupon or two or an extended XBL subscription on the way out the door is the least they can do. For the rest of us already living in the future? The timing of this announcement mere days before the X10 event in San Francisco February 11 can’t be coincidental, we should find out what comes next by then.

Klipsch Image X10i iPhone-friendly earbud impressions

We let you in on one of Klipsch’s little secrets when we revealed the Image X10i to the world back in December, and now that the company’s highest-end iPhone-friendly earbuds will be shipping en masse within a month, we figured we’d grab a set and let you know if they were indeed worth their weight in gold (or just $349.99, really). The X10 has sat atop the company’s most recent lineup of earbuds for awhile now, and with the raging success of the S4i came a stellar idea: add the same iPod / iPhone remote to the flagship set of ‘buds. The X10i is just that — a set of X10 earbuds with the iPhone remote that we highlighted in our S4i review. Needless to say, the X10i isn’t aimed at the budget-minded listener, but we were most curious to see if these really were worth the $250 leap from the aforementioned S4i. Read on to peek our conclusion.

Rogers signed up to carry Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as a Canadian exclusive

We still don’t know whether T-Mobile is going to take on-contract advantage of the X10’s AWS version in the States, but as far as we can tell, WIND won’t be taking advantage of it in Canada now that Rogers has locked it up as an exclusive. The bad news is that it won’t be launching until some time in the second quarter — but when you think back to the X1 and the excruciating 16-month delay between announcement and retail on Rogers, that ain’t half bad. Now, Rogers, just push HTC to rethink its decision not to move past 1.5 on the Magic and Dream and you’re doing alright by us (at least as far as Android gear goes).

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 heading to AT&T

Man, the loot you can uncover when you go snooping around spec pages. That most ambitious of Sony Ericsson projects, the XPERIA X10, is still a long way from being released, but already we can narrow down the list of potential US carriers to just one: AT&T. The guys over at Phandroid were the first to spot the newly added UMTS frequency specs for the phone, and the available 800/850/1900/2100 bands fit only AT&T’s 3G network. That’s gonna be a bitter pill to swallow if you were looking for something like (or better than) an iPhone, but were put off by the wireless provider. Then again, with pre-order prices for unlocked X10s showing up at $999 in some places, maybe you can just look at our lukewarm hands-on and convince yourself this phone ain’t worth it anyway. Go on, you know denial makes sense.
