AMD and Intel’s six-core CPU plans revealed by mobo makers
AMD and Intel’s six-core CPU plans revealed by mobo makers
You have to love DigiTimes and those loquacious sources it seems to keep finding. The latest word from the Taiwanese grapevine suggests that both Intel and AMD will be bringing out six-core CPUs to the consumer market by the middle of this year. We’re using the term “consumer” rather loosely here as Intel’s first Gulftown chip is expected to be priced north of $1,000. The Core i7-980X is slated for a March release, which just fits inside the Q1 window that earlier rumors had suggested. If you butter your bread on the AMD side, you’ll have to wait a while longer as those 45nm Thuban chips — herafter to be known as the Phenom II X6 1000T series — won’t be landing until at least May. The usual caution when dealing with anonymous sources is advisable, but this sounds like a roadmap with a high likelihood of being accurate.

Nokia X6 Comes with Music and capacitive touchscreen: shipping now
Nokia X6 Comes with Music and capacitive touchscreen: shipping now
What are you thankful for today? If you live in Finland or the UK and pre-ordered a X6 then you might be obliged to Nokia for having just set your new handset free. That’s right pilgrims, Nokia’s new flagship Comes with Music handset is now shipping. The X6 you’ll recall, introduces S60 5th to a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen riding 32GB of storage, a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, TV-out, and tweaked homescreen with a media/social-centric layout. The X6 lists for €450 (pre-tax and pre-carrier subsidies) — a price that ultimately includes the cost of Nokia’s struggling “all-you-can-eat” music service. Perhaps this is the device that finally gives the service legs? Maybe, but we’d start by following through on plans to strip the DRM.

AMD to bring six-core ‘Thuban’ processor to the consumer realm
AMD to bring six-core ‘Thuban’ processor to the consumer realm
Look out, Intel — six cores are mightier than four, don’tcha know? Shortly after introducing a six-core processor in the server sector, AMD is reportedly angling to issue a hexa-core chip over on the consumer side. The chip maker has confirmed to Maximum PC that a six-core slab of silicon (codenamed Thuban) will be released in 2010, with the real kicker being that it’ll be fully backwards compatible with existing AM3 and AM2+ mainboards. It’ll be based on 45nm process technology and will boast an integrated DDR3 controller, 3MB of L2 cache and 6MB of L3 cache, and while the outfit wouldn’t confirm, word on the street has it that the final product will sport a Phenom II X6 moniker. So, Core i9 — what have you to say now?

Nokia Erdos: a shiny specter, or an OLED-equipped reality?
Nokia Erdos: a shiny specter, or an OLED-equipped reality?
We’re in no position to say that Nokia’s so-called Erdos — which was recently caught lookin’ pretty in the video down in the read link — is anything more than a fanatical mockup, but we’re fully ready to be believers. To be frank, we’ve a hard time understanding why Nokia wouldn’t showcase this gem at its recent Nokia World expo if it were indeed nearing release, but whatever the case, we’ve received a number of tips suggested that the OLED-packin’ handset could be formally introduced as early as next month. Falling within the 8xxx series, this ultrathin, ultra-shiny slider boasts a stainless steel design, A-GPS, 3G support, a 2.4-inch QVGA (320 x 240) display, WiFi, USB, 5 megapixel camera (with video recording) and 8GB of internal storage. Feel free to have a look for yourself, but just in case this all proves to be nothing more than a figment of some guy’s imagination, you should probably fall in love with the X6 as well.

Nokia X6 video hands-on: proof that capacitive touchscreens are better
Nokia X6 video hands-on: proof that capacitive touchscreens are better
While Nokia wouldn’t invite us to Nokia World this year, we were fortunate enough to discover a pair of its new X6 handsets on the IFA floor here in Berlin. On hand were two engineering prototypes, one of which was peeling away from its plastic shell while the other seemed less responsive to our finger-taps than the other. Still, it’s clear that the capacitive touchscreen is far more responsive to human touch than the resistive screens found on its N97, or the 5800 XpressMusic especially. This was made abundantly clear when using the on-screen keyboard although some of our swiping gestures were inexplicably ignored in other elements of the interface. But given the choice of the screen being awesome or super-awesome (remember, we’re comparing it to Nokia’s resistive touchscreen legacy), we’ll have to settle on the former for now. Of course, underneath you’ve still got S60 5th, for better or worse, pumping away inside a chubby little candybar — no screen tech can change that. See the action in the video after the break then jump into the gallery to see it sized up with a few of its S60 cousins five times removed.
