Rogers yanks HTC Dream from shelves for urgent emergency call fix

Rogers yanks HTC Dream from shelves for urgent emergency call fix
Some of you Rogers subscribers have probably already taken your carrier up on its offer to upgrade your Dream to a Magic, but if not, pay very close attention here: calling 911 doesn’t work right now without making some changes. Basically, there’s an issue that prevents emergency calls from being completed if location-based services are enabled, which means you’ve got to head into Settings and disable GPS — not an optimal solution by any stretch of the imagination. Rogers and HTC are said to be working on a patch as we speak, but in the meantime, don’t expect to waltz into a Rogers store and pick up one of these bad boys.

Sanyo’s Eneloop Kairo hand warmers just barely beat Old Man Winter to America

Sanyo’s Eneloop Kairo hand warmers just barely beat Old Man Winter to America

Sanyo’s Eneloop line of wares have been slowly but surely crossing the Atlantic (or the Pacific, depending on the preferred route of the day) for some time now, but the all-too-enticing Eneloop Kairo has managed to stay far, far away from North America. Until now, of course. As winter sets in across much of the mainland, Sanyo has just started selling the hand warmers to frigid Yanks. The KIR-SE1S is a single-sided, egg-shaped device that ships in white and pink hues, while the double-sided KIR-SL2S (available in silver and pink) is designed to heat those who feel as if they’re living life within an icebox. The single-sided version promises up to four hours of warmth on a full charge, while the two-sided model delivers one to three hours depending on what setting you select. Check ‘em out soon for $34.99 and $44.99 in order of mention.

Google Maps Navigation makes trip across the pond, thanks to some hackery

Google Maps Navigation makes trip across the pond, thanks to some hackery

Apparently us Yanks have been spoiled by the warm embrace of Google Maps Navigation, forgetting that our friends in the UK don’t have the same luxury. Leave it to Electricpig to connect worlds, finding a somewhat hack-induced way to bring the app upgrade to British Android 1.6 devices. Instructions are pretty easy, so if you’re game, don your DIY hat and click over.

Pentax’s limited edition Korejanai K-x DSLR reminds us of Harlequin VW Golf

Pentax’s limited edition Korejanai K-x DSLR reminds us of Harlequin VW Golf

You Yanks won’t be getting your paws around this without a buddy in Japan ready and willing to ship it your way, but those camped out in the Land of the Rising Sun can soon jockey for an opportunity to grab the most colorful Pentax K-x DSLR of all time. The Korejanai K-x — which was engineered by the same folks behind the ‘Self Destruct Button‘ USB hub — looks as if it had all of its panels painted a different hue, and as diehard lovers of the iconic 1996 Volkswagen Harlequin Golf, we can’t help but drool here. Only 100 of these will be sold, and it’ll be bundled with a matching Korejanai Robot Model. Of course, the camera itself is identical to the standard version save for the paint job, but somehow we’re guessing you’ll appreciate this one just a wee bit more. It’s set to sell for ¥79,800 (around $880), with orders being accepted starting at 10AM JST on November 2nd. Best set your alarms, kids!

WiFi-enabled bathroom scale slides into USA, overweight Yanks sluggishly back away

WiFi-enabled bathroom scale slides into USA, overweight Yanks sluggishly back away

Oh sure, we Americans love our fast food. And we love our technology. But do we really love the latter? Withings has just announced that the world’s first WiFi-enabled bathroom scale has made its way into the States after a few months abroad, and we have to say, this could change everything. When pouncing upon it, the scale automatically records the user’s body weight, lean / fat mass and calculated body mass index (BMI) to his or her secure webpage, and if you’re more the iPhone type, it can beam data to a Withings iPhone app as well. It’s available now for $159, but you can certainly wait ’til your latest diet has had some sort of effect before bringing one home. A delightful demonstration video is waiting for you just past the break.

AT&T yanks BlackBerry Bold visual voicemail software update

AT&T yanks BlackBerry Bold visual voicemail software update

Hope you Bold owners out there managed to snag AT&T’s BlackBerry Bold visual voicemail software update while it lasted, because an internal memo leaked to BGR says it’s been pulled due to compatibility problems with “network enhancements being deployed.” That sounds to us like there’s an issue with either those 850MHz 3G rollouts or whatever black magic Ma Bell’s doing to get iPhone MMS up and running, but either way, it’s one more fire for AT&T’s engineers to put out while its customers sit around waiting.

Bunch of unreleased Nokias caught chatting amongst themselves

Bunch of unreleased Nokias caught chatting amongst themselves

At a quick glance, you might write off this picture as nothing more than a rehash of recently-launched Nokia models. Look closer, though — way closer — and you might notice that the phone in the front is actually an N97 Mini (check d-padless keyboard, for instance). Going around the table, you realize that we’re actually dealing with a who’s-who of new and unannounced gear: a 6760 (Yanks know this as the Surge), an E72, E52, and a chromed-up touchscreen device that looks like it could be the long-rumored 5900 XpressMusic. Who has access to all this awesome stuff? Some retailer, apparently, who’s got a public Flickr account and a happy shutter finger. We’ll take one of each, please.
